PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Washington University-St. Louis scored a goal in each half and posted a 2-0 men's soccer victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Â
It was the University Athletic Association opener for each team. Rochester, ranked 17
th in the current United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, is 5-1-3, 0-1 UAA. Washington is 7-1-0 overall, 1-0 UAA. The Bears have won three straight, all by shutout.
Â
Michael Gemmell and Owen Culver scored the goals for Washington. Each goalkeeper – Matt Martin for Washington,
Santino Lupica-Tondo for Rochester – made one save. The teams combined for 18 shots.
Â
It was that kind of a game. Not many great scoring chances each way. In the second half, down 2-0, Rochester put together a flurry of rushes downfield into the penalty area. With red-shirted defenders crowding the box, it was tough to find space to shoot.
Â
Hypsher hit a blazer midway through the 2nd half.
Rochester's best first-half chance came in the 25
th minute.
Othman Belhseine broke through on a breakaway when a clearance pass did not go far enough. He tried to loop the ball over Martin who was in the center of the goal. The attempt bounced past the right post.
Washington's Sergio Rivas shot from the left edge of the penalty arc and forced a save by Lupica-Tondo after a Rochester pass went awry with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. The Bears broke through 10 minutes before halftime. Julian Gancman chipped a pass diagonally to the left side of the box where Gemmell headed it into the right side of the net.
Â
Culver made it 2-0 before 10 minutes ran off the second half clock. He collected a ball from Rivas and lobbed it into the top right corner of the goal.
Â
Rochester turned up the pressure midway through the second half, producing three opportunities to get on the board.
Tony Hypsher strode forward and cracked a waist-high shot that was batted down by a defender. Then
Colin Canning headed a shot just over the crossbar from eight yards out. With the crowd urging them on, the Yellowjackets kept it up. Hypsher weaved through traffic and slid the ball to
Joe Anderson in the penalty area. He tried to push it further ahead to
Rio Kehe near the penalty mark. But he couldn't get his footing set and the chance went away.
