PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester soccer team ran into a stout defensive squad in the form of 3rd-ranked Washington University in St. Louis, falling 3-0 in its UAA conference opener on Saturday afternoon at Fauver Stadium.
Rochester falls to 5-3-1 on the year and is 0-1 to start the UAA season. #3 Washington remains unbeaten on the season and is now 8-0-1 and 1-0 in the conference.
Jess Shapiro, Tyler Wilson and Sydney Essler each scored for the visiting Bears.
The Yellowjackets were held to just two shots on goal in the game, both of which were saved away by keeper Sidney Conner. In Rochester's net,
Emma Schechter started and made one save.
UR's
Megan Pung earned the first shot of the game by either squad, firing a low, skidding free kick from 30 yards toward the right post in the fourth minute.
Overall, the 'Jackets hung with the Bears in the opening minutes, consistently intercepting passes, leading to potential counter attack opportunities. Unfortunately, the Bears defense recovered well in those instances, generating turnovers to regain possession.
Wash U. got on the board in the 16th minute. Shapiro was able to one-time a ball towards the top middle of the net, deflecting in the cross from the right endline by teammate Kate Flynn.
Late in the half, Rochester's
Emma Bates recorded a steal in the midfield and sent a pass up towards
Syd Coggins who was charging up the middle of the field, but the pass sailed just a bit too far and Conner was able to come off the line to break-up the chance.
In the second half, the Bears kept applying pressure early on offensively, trying to boost its lead, earning multiple corners in the opening five minutes.
The lead doubled to 2-0 at the 59:38 mark when Wilson found the back of the net on a high lofted shot from 25 yards out which was just over the reach of a leaping Schechter in the net. Shapiro and Gaelen Clayton picked up assists on the play for Washington.
Rochester's second shot of the game came shortly after the goal, when
Robin de Jong took a hard shot from the left wing at the edge of the box towards the top right corner. Conner was again there for the save, keeping the Yellowjackets off the board.
Wash U's Essler finished the scoring in the 76th minute on a breakaway following a small collision with the Yellowjacket defense which opened up the field. Gabbie Cesarone earned the assist after sending the ball up from the Bears defensive midfield.
Prior to the game, both Schechter and senior teammate
Kailee Sowers were honored for earning the annual Lysle 'Spike' Garnish Scholar-Athlete Awards from the Rochester athletic department this fall. The awards are given out to the top senior student-athletes at Rochester each year.
Rochester's schedule doesn't get any easier for its next game, as the Yellowjackets get another top-10 opponent in #9 University of Chicago next weekend. The game in the Windy City is set for 11 am (central) on October 9th.
