A Perfect End to Senior Day - Rochester Beats Emory in Double OT

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Andrew Moglianesi put the perfect cap on Senior Day for men's soccer by scoring two goals – the gamewinner with 2:54 to play – as the University of Rochester defeated #17 Emory University at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The win puts the fate of both Rochester and Emory into the hands of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Committee. Rochester finished its UAA season at 3-3-1 with an overall mark of 9-3-4. Emory, ranked #17 in the current poll of the United Soccer Coaches, is 3-2-2 in the UAA, 9-3-4 overall.

Both of Moglianesi's goals came from the penalty spot. He gave Rochester a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute. Tony Hypsher, inserted into the lineup for some offensive spark, cut through on the left side and into the box. He was pulled down by an Emory defender and the spot kick awarded. Moglianesi converted at 25:35.

Emory had a couple of chances in the last 10 minutes of the half. Joe Beare fired from distance on left wing, but the shot carried over the crossbar with nine minutes left. Two minutes later, Ethan Cohen served a ball from right wing to Madison Conduah who deflected it over the crossbar.

Conduah scored the tying goal before the second half was two minutes old. Matthew Tanzer took a corner kick from the right (attacking) corner. As he hit it, Conduah flashed to the near post and headed it quickly into the upper right corner before UR goalkeeper Santino Lupica-Tondo could react.

The Eagles hit the crossbar twice. Eight minutes after the equalizer, a rush down the right touchline found Max Mehlman rushing down the middle. His shot hit the bar and was eventually hoisted out of trouble.

Emory had an untypical chance to break the tie in the 78th minute. With the penalty area crowded with jerseys from both sides, the ball came into the center. Lupica-Tondo was ruled to have covered the ball beneath him. An indirect free kick was awarded from just outside the edge of the crease. All the Rochester players crowded along the goal line to shut off as much as possible in a clear look t goal. Will Tichy tapped the ball to Cohen whose rising shot was blocked.

Moglianesi put a dangerous ball across the face of goal in the 86th minute but none of the white shirts could reach it. Two minutes later, Alejandro Gomez swerved a corner kick into the box but Lupica-Tondo smothered the shot from close range, taken by Trey Rielly.

Emory's second shot off the woodwork came early in the first overtime. It was a free kick from Gomez to Josh Berman for a header. Gomez hit a hard, low shot for the lower left corner early in the second overtime. Lupica-Tondo saved it, then covered up. In the midde of the second OT, Cohen sent a ball over from right wing to the back post where Jake Attalah was waiting. But he couldn't get to it.

The winning goal came from a pass by Moglianesi. He swept down the left side to cross into the middle with white shirts coming through. The ball was touched by a defender and the PK followed at 1:07.06.
