GOERGEN ATHLETIC CENTER – The University of Rochester men's tennis team earned a nail-biting win over crosstown rival RIT on Wednesday evening, emerging with a 5-4 win.
The Yellowjackets had three double-winners on the day, led by
Pasquale Procaccino who won at both #1 doubles and #1 singles. Teammate and doubles partner
Kai Yuminaga also won twice, while
Antony Georgiadis also earned two wins on the day.
Rochester improves to 1-1 on the season, while RIT drops to 2-3 overall. The 5-4 decision was the closest in the all-time series since 2007 when the Tigers earned a 5-4 victory on their home courts.
UR's number one doubles pair of Procaccino and Yuminaga earned an 8-3 win to start off the match. After RIT took the number two spot 8-4, Georgiadis paired with
Thomas Xue at 3rd doubles for an 8-5 win, giving the Yellowjackets a 2-1 lead after doubles play.
In singles, the first two matches were split, making the score 3-2 Rochester.
Yuminaga defeated Verosh Jayanetti 6-2, 6-4 at number two, with RIT's Jake Wolicki defeating
Adrian Zhang 6-4, 7-5 at number four.
Georgiadis won a key point for the 'Jackets at 3rd singles, rallying after dropping the first set to Ethan Martin for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 win, moving UR within one point of clinching the match.
Another rally from Proccacino clinched the victory for UR, as the junior topped Brennan Bull 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 in a tight match for the fifth point.
To close out, RIT won at number five and number six in straight sets to reach the final score. Nick Lim defeated Xue 6-3, 6-0, while Jacob Meyerson won 6-0, 6-1 over
Kenneth Lee.
