Rochester Falls to #23 Geneseo in Women's Soccer Opener

BRIAN F. PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Rochester battled evenly through much of the match before Geneseo scored three goals in the second half for a 3-1 woen's soccer victory at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Hannah Sullivan scored two goals for the visitors and Nicole Bell scored one. The Rochester goal was scored by sophomore Claire Grover off a cross from Carolyn Richards. Geneseo is ranked #23 in the pre-season poll conducted by the United Soccer Coaches. The Knights are the favorites in the SUNYAC race.

Emma Schechter made three saves in goal for Rochester. Geneseo's Angel Bennett had three saves as well. The Yellowjacket defense held firm. Scoring chances were slim for both teams in the first 45 minutes. Geneseo's Olivia Raucci had a shot off a headed pass into the area, but the UR defense blocked it. Late in the half, Schechter dove on a lead pass for Juliette Frischmann.

Rochester had some success attacking down the right flank. In the 21st minute, Groverran right to left through the penalty area and almost slipped the ball under a diving Bennett with Richards waiting to pounce on a rebound.

Richards put in a cross in the 47th minute but the Knights managed to shield Olivia Geno off the ball. Hailee Mitchell had a good shot early in the half that was saved by Bennett just before Grover could tap it in.

The opening goal came from Sullivan, Geneseo's most dangerous attacker on the afternoon. She was sent wide to the left of the penalty area. Just before she reached the endline, she guided the ball into the lower right hand corner for a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute.

UR evened it three minutes later. Richards lofted a cross from right wing to the back post where Grover smartly headed it inside the left post before Bennett could react.

The Knights went back in front in the 62nd minutes. Bell collected a ball in the middle of the pitch, 30 yards from goal. She turned and fired. The ball blazed just under the crossbar for a 2-1 lead. The final goal came from Sullivan in the 89th minute. Geneseo was trying to eat up time deep in the right hand corner. Sullivan was able to break through the trap. From a tough angle on the right side of the box, she guided her shot through a tangle of legs and into the left side for the 3-1 final.
