GENEVA, NY – Senior goalkeeper
Emma Schechter was terrific in net as the University of Rochester women's soccer team fought to a scoreless draw against #2 William Smith College on Saturday afternoon at Cozzens Field.
The draw extends Rochester's unbeaten streak against the Herons to three straight games after wins in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, with William Smith being ranked in the top-2 in Division III each game. The Yellowjackets and Herons both move to 1-1-1 on their 2021 seasons so far.
Schechter finished with 11 saves, one shy of her career-high, keeping the Herons off the scoresheet for her second straight shutout.
The UR senior faced a total 26 shots, 11 on goal, while Rochester's offense was held to four shot attempts, all of which ended up on goal. Kirsten Nelson earned the shutout for the Herons in goal.
In addition, William Smith held a 10-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Rochester's
Syd Coggins was the teams offensive leader with two shots on goal.
Sarah Martin and
Maeve Bostley each had one for the Yellowjackets.
Bostley's shot came in the 61st minute, with Nelson punching the ball away for a save, leading to one of Rochester's corner kicks.
The Yellowjackets other corner kick came in the 86th minute and ultimately led to one of Coggins' shots, again being saved away by Nelson.
For William Smith, Sarah Gray, Julia Keogh and Amanda Adams each took four shots.
The Herons best offensive output of the game came midway through the second half, with two shots and two corner kicks in a two-minute span from the 64th through 66th minute.
Late in regulation, Seneca Blakely-Armitage had back-to-back shot attempts in the 89th minute, but the Yellowjacket defense stood tall, thwarting both attempts before they could get to Schechter in goal.
William Smith took the lone shot of the overtime periods, coming off the foot of Adams in the 104th minute, but again the UR defense blocked it away to safety.
Rochester's next contest is a home matchup on Tuesday at 4 pm against St. John Fisher.
