Women's Soccer is Edged by St. John Fisher, 2-1

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Visiting St. John Fisher College did all the little things right to secure a 2-1 women's soccer victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cardinals pressed from the start to put pressure on the Rochester defense. They marked tightly and had players chasing all over the field to gain possession of the ball. And they did well to cut out crosses and lead passes which prevented the Yellowjackets from building a consistent attack.

Fisher scored twice in a three-minute span of the first half. Isabella Guarracino stole a clearance on right wing. She moved to the left slightly, then shot down the middle as Rochester goalkeeper Becca Rust charged out. That goal, in the 21st minute, was followed by one from Carli Kovarik in the 24th minute that doubled the lead. The ball was thrown into the box where Kovarik got to it and drove it into the roof of the net. Guarracino was denied by the crossbar in the 16th minute. The ball hit the bar, then flew over the endline for a goal kick.

Rochester's best chance when the Yellowjackets were down 2-0 came in the 75th minute. Syd Coggins was sprung on a breakaway, a step behind the Cardinal backs. Fisher goalie Halle Tickell came out, leaving the net unguarded. From 30 yards away, Coggins tried to capitalize on the opportunity. She rushed her shot and the ball cork-screwed away from goal.

Three minutes later, the ball was swung into the area looking for Cesca Shepherd. Jessica Aldred moved in and clears the cross over the sideline for a throw-in. Rochester did score in the 86th minute. Mia McGinty's pass found Shepherd straight out, almost 30 yards from goal. With Tickell rushing out of the goal. Shepherd was able to drive it into the net. Tickell did not make a save. Rust had three saves.

The win was the third for the Cardinals who stand at 3-1 overall. Rochester, which tied then-#2 William Smith College 0-0 on Saturday, is 1-2-1 overall. Fisher plays at SUNY Fredonia on Saturday at 1 pm. Rochester plays three straight on the road: at Alfred on Saturday at 6 pm, at Keuka College on September 22 at 7 pm, and at Waynesburg College at 11 am on September 25.
