PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Junior
Andrew Moglianesi found the back of the net with just one second left in the first overtime, lifting the #4 University of Rochester men's soccer team to a hard fought 1-0 victory over crosstown rival RIT on Tuesday evening at Fauver Stadium.
The winning goal came after senior
Will Eisold's pass from the left wing deflected off an RIT defender. After the carom, Moglianesi grabbed the ball and snuck behind the defense to beat RIT keeper Jason Trapp for the sudden-death goal.
Moglianesi's tally was the second of his career, and first game winner. Rochester improves to 3-0-1 on the season with the win. RIT suffers its first defeat, dropping to 4-1-1 so far in 2021. It was the seventh straight triumph for the Yellowjackets against RIT.
Rochester's
Tony Hypsher had the first solid chance of the contest in the games fourth minute. After a long Eisold throw in from the left sideline, a loose ball in the air found Hypsher's foot in the crease where he tried to pop it into the right corner of the net. RIT defender Zac Salas was there though, clearing the ball off the line to keep the game scoreless.
Throughout much of the remaining 40 minutes of the half, the visiting Tigers used their pressure to keep the Yellowjackets on their heels in the defense half of the field. After the Hypsher shot attempt, RIT took the next four shot attempts of the half, three of which were blocked away by the UR defense.
In the 39th minute, a foul on UR's
Tejan Borchers in the box awarded the Tigers Randy Dickersbach a penalty kick. Dickersbach cracked his shot off the crossbar and down off the ground, bouncing into a crowded box. After returning to his feet, UR keeper
Santino Lupica-Tondo leaped and punched away the bounding ball, keeping the game tied.
On the ensuing UR possession,
Rio Kehe had a good look on net from the right wing about 15 yards out, but his shot was thwarted by Trapp in the Tiger goal.
In the second half, Rochester asserted itself a bit more offensively, but neither team could generate any good scoring chances.
After regulation, RIT held an 8-5 advantage in shots, with only three corner kicks being taken throughout the game, two of which were earned by UR.
Rochester's
Charlie Shanks had a flick header attempt in the first 90 seconds of overtime headed towards the net after a throw in, but the shot was blocked away at the near post.
RIT's Jaden Longdon and Josh Price also had shots blocked in the extra session, as the Tigers held the final edge in that category, leading 10-7.
Among the shots in the game were attempted, and nine were blocked away by defenders, a testament to the swarming defense played by both teams throughout the game. The final block by the UR defense led to the last minute possession which ultimately led to the winning goal in the waning seconds of overtime.
The Yellowjackets are back in action on Saturday when they play host to Hobart College at 7 pm at Fauver Stadium.
