GENEVA, NY – The University of Rochester field hockey team more than three goals for the fourth straight game on Saturday, opening Liberty League play with a 6-0 victory over William Smith College at McCooey Field.
Rochester (6-2, 1-0 Liberty League) got two goals each from
Karina Bridger and
Amanda Strenk, while also getting individual goals from
Juney Lee and
Leona Fisher. The loss drops William Smith to 3-5 on the year and 0-1 in conference play.
It was a quick start for the visiting Yellowjackets, as Rochester used a three-goal burst over three and a half minutes of play in the opening quarter to seize the lead.
Just past the three minute mark, Bridger opened the scoring when she dribbled through the Heron defense from midfield, juked the William Smith goalie to the right and slipped her shot into the cage.
Less than two minutes later, off a penalty corner, Strenk blasted a top of the circle shot to the low left corner for a 2-0 lead.
Fisher scored her first of the year in the 2nd half.
Just 43 seconds later, Strenk made it 3-0, converting on her third penalty stroke goal of the season. The multi-goal effort was Strenk's third of the year, with the senior scoring in every game but one so far. She leads the Yellowjackets with 12 goals this season.
The Herons turned their first penalty corner of the game into their first and only shot of the quarter in the eighth minute. No threat evolved though, as Kate Barilla's attempt from the left wing was easily blocked by the UR corner defense.
Rochester wasn't done scoring in the opening quarter, as Lee scored at the 13 minute mark to make it 4-0. Lee's second of the season came when she attempted a backhand from 8 yards, saw the ball deflect high in the air and come down and land perfectly into the corner of the cage.
Five and a half minutes into the second quarter, Bridger recorded her second score of the game, tapping in a backhand at the right post, coming off a deflected penalty corner shot. Bridger now has four goals on the year.
UR's defense clamped down on the Herons all day, limiting the hosts to just six shots and one which was on goal. Rochester held the 11-6 shot advantage and took five of the games seven corners.
William Smith had a nice chance to get on the board on a corner in the third quarter, but the McKenna Williams shot sailed just wide of the left post.
Late in the third, UR made it 6-0 with Fisher's first goal of the season, as she took a shot from the edge of the circle into the low right corner.
In the last minute of play, William Smith got its one shot on goal after a nice give-and-go, but Makenzie Wodka's shot was saved by UR keeper
Helen Schmitter.
Schmitter played the second half for UR making the one save.
Abigail Walrond picked up the win, but did not need to make a save in the first half.
Rochester's next contest is Wednesday at 7 pm against St. John Fisher College on the road.
