PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX –
Jordyn Kowalkowski and
Robin de Jong scored goals in each half as the University of Rochester defeated SUNY Brockport, 2-1, Â in a women's soccer match at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Â
It is the fourth straight victory for the Yellowjackets (5-2-1). The first three wins in the streak came on the road. Brockport is 4-3-2. The Golden Eagles had three wins and a tie in five matches before coming to Fauver.
Â
Kowalkowski scored in the ninth minute to equalize and de Jong struck with just over 15 minutes to play. That snapped a 1-1 tie. The Brockport goal was scored by Camryn Pettit in the fifth minute.
Â
Brockport launched an attack down the right side. The ball was played into the middle where a Brockport player was set up. The Rochester defense cleared the angled cross, but it went straight to Pettit near the top of the penalty arc. She quickly rifled a shot into the upper right corner.
Â
The Yellowjackets got even with a good passing combination in the ninth minute.
Claire Grover brought the ball out from deep in the area and slid a pass to
Natalie Kocsis as Golden Eagle defenders were organizing. Kocsis found an opening and pushed the ball to Kowalkowski. She dribbed a short distance, then hit a right-footed shot to the upper right corner.
Sheppard was in the middle of a number of good UR attacks.
Brockport's defense, led by goalkeeper Victoria Cangialosi, did well. She made seven saves and Allyson Isereau had a team save in the 52
nd minute on an interesting chance for Rochester. Grover got deep inside the box with white shirts surging in. The ball found its way to her and she tried to backheel it into the center of the net. Cangialosi got caught in the traffic, but Isereau was there to kick it off the line and keep the score at 1-1.
Â
Four minutes later, UR's
Cesca Sheppard made a weaving run down the middle. She got to the top of the penalty area but Brockport's Karlie Mann tipped the ball away before she could shoot. That led to a quick counter attack. Julia Mascaro fired from the top of the box but the ball went just wide of the right post.
Â
With 20 minutes left, Sheppard created the danger again. On a counter attack from left wing, she targeted the top right hand corner but Cangialosi punched it away for a corner kick.
Â
The Yellowjackets found the gamewinner in the 75
th.
Syd Coggins brought the ball down the right side and swung it into the middle. de Jong finished it, with a short dribble and a shot to the top right corner.
Â
UR's Emma Schecter (three saves) had a quick reaction with 11 minutes left to protect the lead, then made a good save on a shot from Brockport's Sydnee Smth. The reaction came after a Brockport chip into the area bounced haphazardly off a UR defender and Schechter punched it away. With eight minutes left, Smith shot from the right endline, just outside the post. Schechter dove to clear it for a corner kick.
Â
