PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester men's soccer picked up its first University Athletic Association win, defeating the Brandeis University Judges, 1-0 on Friday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Both teams came out hot offensively to start the match, combining for four shots and three corner kicks in the first 10 minutes.
Off a corner kick, Max Horowitz picked up the first shot on goal for the Judges, but
Santino Lupica-Tondo made his first of four saves to keep Brandeis off the scoreboard.
Andrew Moglianesi converted UR's first shot on goal in the 19th minute, forcing Quintin Wrabley to make his first of four saves, and
Nick Swanger nearly broke through in the 23rd minute, sending back his blocked shot, but into the arms of Wrabley.
While the two sides would combine for 13 first-half shots, neither UR nor Brandeis would break through, as Lupica-Tondo and Wrabley made four first-half saves to send the Yellowjackets and Judges scoreless into the halftime break.
After an early shot on goal by Tyler Morgan, the two sides settled in for the second half. Early shots by Nico Beninda and Horowitz went wide for the Judges, while
Ben Goldberg's 60th-minute shot was saved by Wrabley.
Following a pair of yellow cards on Rochester, the Judges sent a volley at Lupica-Tondo, with successive shots by Sancho Maroto Tobias and Beninda in the 64th minute, but with two more saves, Lupica-Tondo kept the Yellowjackets level.
Then in the 83rd minute, Rochester finally broke through, as
Tony Hypsher beat his man on a run and curled a cross over to
Avi Lamba just outside the box. The sophomore then settled and fired a laser into the upper, left corner of the net, giving Rochester a 1-0 lead.
And in the waning moments, Brandeis tried to answer, earning an 86th-minute corner, but Beninda's shot sailed wide, and Rochester finished off the 1-0 victory.
With the win, UR moves to 6-2-3 (1-1-1 UAA) on the year, while Brandeis drops to 4-5-2 (0-3-0 UAA).
Lamba netted the 'Jackets' lone goal on the evening, while Hypsher picked up the assist. Lamba, Moran and Swanger each tallied two shots, while Lupica-Tondo made four saves in goal.
Rochester next hosts New York University on Sunday, Oct. 16, continuing UAA play against the Violets at 11:00 a.m.
