PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester women's soccer picked up its second-straight conference win, defeating the New York University Violets, 1-0 on Sunday at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Claire Grover nearly gave Rochester the early lead in the opening period, with a seventh-minute shot from the left wing that sailed wide right, followed by a near breakaway just a few minutes later.
Emma Cohen's 9th-minute shot forced Riley Felsher to make her first save, while Gabrielle Funk picked up NYU's first shot 8:25 into the first half, sending one wide of the net.
In the 33rd minute, Cohen added another shot, forcing a leaping save by Felsher and setting up UR's second corner, but Rochester's offense couldn't find another shot before the end of the half.
Meanwhile, NYU looked to score before halftime, with a run from Tate Jordan setting up her shot, but
Gabby Sabatier made her first of three saves, sending the two sides into halftime without a goal.
Julie Beedle started things off in the second half with another shot on goal, giving Sabatier her second save of the afternoon, while Jordan nearly knocked in another shot, glancing one off the crossbar in the 63rd minute following an NYU corner.
The Violets had another chance off a corner in the 66th minute but couldn't connect, and on the counter,
Carolyn Richards found some open space to set up a Rochester goal.
Richards found
Sam Hawkins on the left wing, and her cross made its way in front of the goal to
Robin de Jong, who buried it in the back of the net to give UR a 1-0 lead with just under 25 to play.
And while the Violets would earn four corners down the stretch, Sabatier and Rochester's defense held NYU without a shot the rest of the way, finishing off their second-straight University Athletic Association victory.
Rochester moves to 7-2-4 (2-1-1 UAA) with the win, while NYU drops to 5-3-5 (0-3-1 UAA) with the loss.
Grover and Cohen each led UR with two shots, while de Jong notched the 'Jackets' lone goal on the afternoon, and Hawkins tallied the assist.
In goal, Sabatier made three saves as Rochester and NYU each tallied eight shots, three of which were on goal.
Rochester next heads to Cleveland, Ohio to kick off a two-game UAA, road trip, taking on the No. 6-ranked Case Western Reserve University Spartans on Friday, Oct. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
