Top-Ranked Chicago Wins Battle With #22 Rochester

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – In a clash between two nationally ranked men's soccer squads, the top-ranked University of Chicago earned a 1-0 victory over the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

The game was the University Athletic Association opener for both squads, as the win moves Chicago to 1-0 in the conference, also remaining unblemished on the year at 10-0-0. Rochester drops just its second game of the season, now sitting at 5-2-2 overall, 0-1 in the UAA.

Chicago's game-winner was scored in the 66th minute by Lyndon Hu, as he cracked a low, skidding shot into the bottom right corner from just outside the box.

Rochester started out strong, earning the games first two corner kicks in the opening ten minutes of the contest. Neither opportunity generate a strong scoring chance for the Yellowjackets.

In the fifth minute, Chicago's leading scorer, Ryan Yetishefsky, took an open shot from outside the box which sizzled just over the crossbar.

Another chance for the Maroons came in the 16th minute following a long throw in. On that chance, a bouncing ball came to the foot of Robbie Pino, but again the ball skimmed just over the bar.

Less than a minute later, Santino Lupica-Tondo was forced to make his first save of the game, diving to his right to stop a hard shot from Tanner Baldwin.

Lupica-Tondo made another diving save in the 22nd minute, denying Hu a chance to score the games opening goal.

With just over five minutes left in the half, Rochester's Nate Lazzara took a left-footed volley shot off a bouncing ball in the box, but his attempt went just wide right of the post.

Richard Gillespie of the Maroons took the third shot on goal in the half for the visitors, heading a corner kick on target, but Lupica-Tondo made the save, sending the teams into halftime tied at 0-0.

Early in the second half, Rochester's Tony Hypsher corralled a long ball pass from teammate Kol Bassuk and took a long shot which ended up missing just outside the right post.

The Yellowjackets best chance of the game came in the 59th minute off the foot of Tyler Moran. The Yellowjacket midfielder gained possession and dribbled along the right wing and took a hard blast from 22 yards which was headed for inside the right post. Chicago's keeper Will Boyes was there to make a diving save, preserving the clean sheet.

Chicago broke through with Hu's goal at the 66-minute mark. A long ball was chipped into the box, bounced off a defender and to the foot of Alex Lee in the box. Lee dropped a pass back to Hu who was 19-yards out and in open space for the shot which snuck inside the post for the 1-0 lead.

The Maroon defense stiffened the rest of the way, holding Rochester without a shot for the final 20 minutes of the game. Overall, Chicago held a 15-7 lead in shots, with the Maroons taking three of the five corners in the game.

Rochester continues its UAA conference slate next Sunday on the road at Washington-St. Louis, with kickoff set for 11 am central time.
