PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester men's soccer dropped their Senior Day matchup against the Alvernia University Golden Wolves, 3-2, on Saturday at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
Rochester got off to a hot start, as after Evan Bauer's opening shot went wide,
Colin Canning sent in a 2nd-minute volley at Evan Solley, forcing a save. On the rebound though,
Kol Bassuk headed it into the back of the net to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Wolves though quickly found their answer. Connor Kraycik's eighth-minute shot was blocked, but less than a minute later, Gabe Wunderlich's cross found Justin Fetrow uncovered in the box, and the sophomore tapped it in to even the score at one-all.
Wunderlich then looked to make it 2-1 in the 15th minute, staying onside and beating the keeper on a breakaway, but Wunderlich's shot sailed just wide, keeping the 'Jackets and Golden Wolves still level at one.
Over the next six minutes, Rochester earned a trio of corners, but two shots from
Charlie Shanks went wide, but Tejan Borcher's put a header on goal, but Solley made the save to keep the match tied.
Just minutes later,
Ben Goldberg nearly put the Yellowjackets out in front, with a shot from the middle of the box, but again, Solley made the save.
Wunderlich would then make up for his breakaway miss in the 30th minute, giving Alvernia a 2-1 lead.
Off a throw-in, Ryan Cogill's cross found Wunderlich, who outmaneuvered two Rochester defenders and sent a shot past the outstretched arms of
Santino Lupica-Tondo into the far-right corner of the net to give Alvernia a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Eagles would continue to apply the offensive pressure, picking up their first corner in the 35th minute, while
Matt Cosentino added a shot on goal in the 37th minute.
In the 38th minute though, Alvernia made it 3-1 as Nick Denlinger headed it in off Travis Slear's crossbar rebound, giving the Golden Wolves a two-goal lead.
And while the Yellowjackets would go into the locker room down 3-1, they would regroup and quickly pull within a score.
While Rochester's defense held Alvernia to just three second-half shots, the 'Jackets looked to score on the offensive end, tallying nine second-half shots of their own.
Nick Swanger sent in the 'Jackets' first of nine in the 52nd minute, while Borchers made it a one-goal deficit in the 55th minute. Off a corner kick by Goldberg, Borchers headed into the back of the net, cutting the Golden Wolves' lead to 3-2 with 35:55 to play.
Goldberg then had a chance to even things in the 57th minute off
Othman Belhseine's centering pass, but Alvernia's defense made a tremendous play to keep Goldberg from getting a point-blank shot off, keeping their one-goal lead.
On the other end, Alvernia stole a pass and took it the other way, with Cogill sending one at Lupica-Tondo, but the junior made one his lone save of the afternoon to keep the lead at just one.
Goldberg sent another shot win in the 64th minute, while Borchers added a shot on goal, forcing a Solley save in the 71st minute.
But the 'Jackets could find the equalizer, with three more second-half shots from Shanks,
Phillip Davis and
Tyler Moran getting blocked and going wide.
Davis' header off a 74th-minute corner went just wide, while
Joe Anderson saw his 80th-minute try blocked by the Golden Wolves' defense.
Down to the final few seconds, Lupica-Tondo sent in a deep cross that set up a Rochester corner, and while Goldberg and the Yellowjackets were able to get the corner off, Rochester was unable to find a last-minute score and fell, 3-2.
Rochester falls to 6-3-4 with the loss, while Alvernia moves to 10-2-5 with the win.
The Yellowjackets gave up multiple goals for just the second time this season, and their three goals allowed were the most UR's conceded all year.
Borchers and Shanks each led Rochester with three shots, with Bassuk and Borchers tallying the two Yellowjacket goals. Canning and Goldberg each notched assists, while Lupica-Tondo tallied one save.
The Yellowjackets will look to bounce back when they hit the road for a two-game conference road trip, beginning on Friday, Oct. 28 in Cleveland, Ohio against Case Western Reserve at 5 p.m.
