CLEVELAND, OH –
Nick Swanger put Rochester on the board in the 20th minute, but the junior's early score wasn't enough, as the Case Western Reserve University Spartans defeated University of Rochester men's soccer, 2-1, on Friday evening at DiSanto Field.
Matt Vatne got things started for the Spartans in the fourth minute, with the first shot of the game off a corner kick by Alex Lippiatt that was blocked by the Yellowjacket defense.
Lippiat then nearly gave CWRU an early lead with a free kick from a dangerous position in the 11th minute, but Satino Lupica-Tondo made his first save of the evening, keeping the Spartans scoreless, but giving Case Western Reserve their second of five corner kicks.
Jacob Salmon sent another shot on goal at Lupica-Tondo following the corner but couldn't convert before
Tony Hypsher got UR's offense going with a corner in the 15th minute.
The Yellowjackets then drew a foul in the 19th minute, and on the ensuing free kick, took a 1-0 lead.
Joe Anderson took the free kick, sending one into the box from about 30-yards out.
Kol Bassuk settled it for
Nick Swanger, who drilled it into the upper-left corner of the net to give Rochester the lead.
But just under five minutes later, Vatne found the equalizer to level the score at one-all.
After Salmon's opening salvo was blocked and Lupica-Tondo saved Sean Atwater's 25th-minute shot, Vatne settled a bouncing ball, beat his defender to the edge and shot one just inside the post and past Lupica-Tondo to even the score at 1-1.
Lukas Dalakis got another shot on goal for Case Western Reserve before the end of the half, netting one of Lupica-Tondo's four first-half saves, before UR looked for another score just before the horn.
Off a long pass,
Colin Canning had a 1-on-1 opportunity with the keeper, but Jackson Kallen made a tremendous save to keep the score level, while CWRU's defense prevented any more shots on the ensuing corner to send CWRU and UR into the half all knotted at one.
Case Western though, quickly took the lead to start the second half. The Spartans earned a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box, and Lippiatt curled a shot into the top-left corner of the net to give CWRU a 1-0 lead.
Rochester then got their first corner and shot of the second half, but Anderson's shot 59th-minute shot was blocked.
And while the 'Jackets' defense settled in and kept CWRU off the scoreboard the rest of the way, with Lupica-Tondo fending off four shots and picking up another save, offensively, UR wouldn't get another shot till the final 10 minutes of the second half.
In the 83rd minute, Moran's free-kick was headed away, while with one last shot from midfield, Lupica-Tondo's deep free kick was batted away by Kallen to seal the 2-1 Spartan victory.
Rochester falls to 6-4-4 (1-2-2 UAA) with the loss, while CWRU moves to 8-3-3 (3-1-1 UAA).
Swanger scored the lone goal for UR and was one of four 'Jackets to tally a shot, while both Anderson and Bassuk netted assists. In goal for the Yellowjackets, Lupica-Tondo tallied five saves.
The Yellowjackets next wrap up their two-game road trip on Sunday, Oct. 30 in Pittsburgh, PA against the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans at 11:00 a.m.
