Tartans Edge Yellowjackets in UAA Play

PITTSBURGH, PA – The University of Rochester men's soccer fell to the Carnegie Mellon University Tartans, 1-0, on Sunday at the CMU Soccer Field.

Though both teams tallied three shots on goal, Alejandro Fernandez's 36th-minute strike would prove to be the difference in the final tally.

Ethan Vertal got things started for Carnegie Mellon with his 3rd-minute shot sent wide, while Kol Bassuk tallied Rochester's first shot, a header off a Yellowjacket corner sent wide of the net.

Colin Canning notched the first shot on goal in the 12th minute, forcing one of three saves on the day for CMU's keeper, Liam Ryan.

Ryan added another save to his ledger in the 32nd minute, saving Santi Ponce Ocampo's volley, before the Tartans got on the scoreboard just minutes later.

Zach Schonwetter found Kiran Sarvepalli open in the box, who sent it over to Fernandez by the near post, and the sophomore knocked it through to give Carnegie Mellon a 1-0 lead.

And though the 'Jackets would get off five more shots in the second half, including Mikey Burke's shot on goal in the 56th minute, Ryan and CMU's defense kept UR from finding the equalizer.

For Rochester, Santino Lupica-Tondo made a pair of saves, keeping the Tartans from extending their lead in the 63rd and 64th minutes.

Down the stretch, the Yellowjackets earned three corners over a three-and-a-half-minute stretch, but shots by Joe Anderson and Nate Lazzara went wide and were blocked, respectively, and the Tartans finished off the 1-0 victory.

With the loss, UR falls to 6-5-4 (1-3-2 UAA) on the year, while the Tartans move to 11-3-1 (3-3 UAA).

Ashton Prescott led the 'Jackets with a pair of shots, while Lupica-Tondo made two saves.

The Yellowjackets will wrap up the 2022 campaign on Saturday, Nov. 5 in Atlanta, Ga. against Emory University at 11 a.m.
