Ryan Algier of the Rochester men's basketball team and senior
Scott Sikorski from the UR men's cross country team were honored by the University Athletic Association as Athletes of the Week in their respective sports on Monday afternoon.
Algier was selected as Co-Performer of the Week with Kevin Sax of Carnegie Mellon.
On the hardwood, Algier was Rochester's leading scorer as the Yellowjackets claimed two wins to earn the tournament title at the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout over the weekend. He earned tournament MVP accolades in the process, averaging 22.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg, 1.5 bpg while shooting 74% overall and 64% from 3-point range.
During Thursday's win over St. John Fisher, Algier was 6-for-7 shooting (.857) and made 4-of-5 (.800) 3-pointers in a 16-point performance, leading to a Rochester 81-76 comeback victory. He added 5 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 block. On Saturday, he followed that up with a season-high 28 points in the Yellowjackets 75-69 win over Nazareth. He shot 11-for-16 (.688) from the floor, made three 3-pointers and pulled down a game-high 8 rebounds and 2 blocks as well in the win.
Sikorski earned All-American honors and finished in 21st place at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships on Saturday at the Forest Akers Golf Course in Lansing, Michigan. The senior improved on last years finish at NCAA XC nationals by 174 places, grabbing AA honors for the first time in his cross country career (and second time overall, 2022 outdoor track & field).
He ranked 21st in the field of 294 runners, crossing the 8K course in 25:25.5. Sikorski becomes the 16th UR runner to be named an All-American in team history and is the first since 2011. Sikorski's finish at NCAA's was the best by a UR runner at cross country nationals since the 1996 season. It was also his fifth straight NCAA nationals appearance overall, spanning two cross country, two outdoor track and one indoor track season.
