Men's Tennis Defeated by Vassar in Spring 2022 Opener

Visiting Vassar College claimed its first win of the 2022 Spring tennis season with a 7-2 victory over Rochester at the Goergen Athletic Center indoor courts on Sunday. Rochester claimed its points at #2 and #3 singles with both victories coming in three sets.

Vassar swept the three doubles matches, then took fourth and first singles to clinch the team victory with a 5-0 lead. Rochester battled well in the doubles events. At second doubles, Kai Yuminaga and Kei Ogawa lost to Jay Wong and Benjamin Almquist, 8-1.  At third doubles, Mihajlo Ivanovic and Arun Guruswamy needed a 7-2 tiebreaker to defeat UR's Adrian Zhang and Kenneth Lee, 8-7.  The first doubles match needed a longer tiebreaker as Arnav Agostinho and Mathew Yee edged past UR's Pasquale Procaccino and Krish Vennam, 8-7 (10-2 on the tiebreak).

Ivanovic swept Oagwa, 6-3, 6-2, at fourth singles to give Vassar a 4-0 lead. Procaccino defeated Jay Wong, 6-1, in the first set, but Wong rallied for back to back 6-4 victories in sets two and three.

Krish Vennam rallied past Yee in second singles. Yee earned a 6-4 win in the first set before Vennam won 6-2 to level it, then won the point with a 6-4 win in the third set. Agostinho swept Zhang by identical 6-3 scores in fifth singles.

Yuminaga won on the tiebreaker in third singles. He lost to Almquist, 6-2, in the opening set, then won the middle set, 6-4, before capturing the team point with a 9-7 tiebreak score for a 7-6 win. The final set was sixth singles with Vassar's James Balon winning, 6-4, 6-0 over Kenneth Lee.

Rochester will host its second of three consecutive Liberty League opponents when RPI comes to the Goergen Center courts on February 20.
