Three Double-Winners Lead UR Past Union

The University of Rochester men's tennis team picked up its first dual match win of the season on Saturday, defeating visiting Union College 6-3 at the Goergen Athletic Center.

Rochester (1-2) had three double-winners on the day, as Pasquale Procaccino, Krish Vennam and Adrian Zhang all earned wins in singles and doubles play. Union falls to 1-2 on the young season under the guidance of former Yellowjacket Brian Bowman '10.

Procaccino and Vennam got things started in a positive way for Rochester, winning 8-3 at first doubles over Aidan O'Brien and Ben Jacobs. The Dutchmen pair of Ioannis and Dimitris Binopoulos picked up an 8-2 win at second doubles to even the match. Rochester finished off doubles play with an 8-5 win from Zhang and Kenneth Lee at third doubles, moving the match score to 2-1.

In singles, Vennam quickly won 6-2, 6-3 over Jacobs to move UR up 3-1, playing at the #2 position. Kai Yuminaga made it 4-1 Rochester with his 6-4, 6-4 win at #3 over O'Brien.

Union's Dimitris Binopoulos followed by turning in his second win of the day at fourth singles, winning over Kei Ogawa 6-3, 6-2 to keep the Dutchmen alive.

Procaccino ended any thought of a Union comeback though, pulling out a tough straight set win at the top spot over Ioannis Binopoulos 7-5, 7-6 (5), providing the match-clinching point.

Rounding out the match, Zhang was a 6-4, 6-3 straight set winner over Cameron Klepper at number five, while John Hui fell 6-4, 6-2 to Thomas McGuire at the #6 spot in the lineup.

Rochester is back in action on Sunday against Division I opponent Colgate. The UR women also face Colgate at 10 am, with the men's match to follow at 2 pm.
