RIT Defeats Rochester in Liberty League Women's Lacrosse Opener

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Visiting RIT ran off five straight goals straddling the first two quarters to move in front for good with a 15-9 women's lacrosse victory over Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

It was the opening Liberty League game of the season for each team. UR is 1-2 overall, 0-1 in the league. RIT is 2-3, 0-1 in the league. The Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.

Emma Little, Brooke Fiannaca, and Gracie Giannettino scored twice apiece for Rochester. Little had one assist. Mia Perkell scored one goal and set up two others. Sophia Stafford and Grace Crochiere scored one goal apiece. For RIT, Aldyn Savage scored four goals and set up two others. Colette Rigas scored four goals, three from the free position. Julia Tenney and Baylee West scored three goals apiece.

Rochester led early, 2-1 after five minutes, on goals from Giannettino and Perkell. Savage scored her second goal of the quarter with a shot into the roof of the net with just under seven minutes left in the quarter. That started the five-goal run. Savage scored another, then got scores from three teammates – Rigas's first free position shot, Tenney's goal after Rigas dropped a pass over the defense, and West's shot off a free position attempt. It was 6-2.

UR made a couple of runs at the Tigers. Fiannaca bounced a free position shot past RIT goalkeeper Linda Nutter (eight saves) to cut the deficit to 7-4, but West scored seven seconds before halftime to restore the four-goal edge. In the fourth quarter, Fiannaca scored from a Perkell pass in the first 30 seconds (11-6) and 80 seconds later, Giannettino shot, Nutter saved it, and the ball struck the back of Nutter's leg and rolled over the goal line to cut the deficit down to 11-7. Tenney and West scored less than a minute apart to seize a 13-7 lead.

Statistically for Rochester, Little won three draws, caused three turnovers, and collected two ground balls. Crochiere won two draws, had one caused turnover, and collected two ground balls. Perkell had two caused turnovers. The ground ball leaders were goalkeeper Ava Saffren (five plus nine saves in 56:22) and Perkell with four.
