Rochester Falls to St. Lawrence in Liberty League Lax Matchup

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Unbeaten St. Lawrence University kept its high-scoring offense going with a 19-7 victory over the University of Rochester at Edwin Fauver Stadium on Saturday afternoon. SLU improved to 6-0 overall. This was the Liberty League opener for the Saints. Rochester is 1-3 overall. The Yellowjackets are 0-2 in the Liberty League. They hosted RIT in mid-week.
 
St. Lawrence spread the scoring around. Nine players scored goals. Five had two or more. The point leaders were Morgan Arakelian (three goals, two assists, five points), Isabel Silvia and Charlotte Powell with four apiece. Rochester's scoring leader was Gracie Giannettino. She struck three times. Mia Perkell scored two goals for UR. Emma Little and Regi Merkin scored single goals. Lucy Haggerty had two assists.
 
The Saints scored two goals on man advantage and struck four times from the free position. There was a brief flurry straddling the first two quarters that ignited the Saint offense. Rochester used one goal from Merkin (set up by Haggerty) and two from Giannettino to take a 3-2 lead seven minutes into the match. Jacqui Cloutier scored from the free position and Arakelian's first goal nudged the visitors in front, 4-3. Rachel Burke scored from Jaime Allan's pass with Rochester playing short. It was 5-3 after one.
 
Silvia and Arakelian combined for three rapid-fire goals that helped the Saints storm in front. Silvia struck at the start of the second quarter (6-3) and Arakelian converted a free position to make it 7-3 with 12:50 left. SLU won the draw. Silvia sped downfield with the ball and scored immediately for an 8-3 lead.
 
In goal, SLU's Raelynn Bovenzi made 10 saves and allowed seven goals on 24 Rochester shots. Rochester's Ava Saffren made 11 saves. Both goalies went the distance.
 
Statistically for Rochester, Grace Crochiere collected six ground balls, caused two turnovers, and won five draws. Emma Little also won five draws (UR had 12 on the day), caused one turnover, and had one ground ball. Six Rochester players scooped two ground balls after the six by Crochiere. Perkell caused two turnovers.
 
St. Lawrence held a 38-24 advantage in total shots (30-17 in shots on goal). The Saints had 22 turnovers to 23 for UR. Rochester successfully cleared 14 of 22 chances. SLU was 15 of 24. The Saints won 18 draws to 12 for the Yellowjackets.
