Scoring Balance Carries Rochester to Lacrosse Win at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Seven players scored two goals apiece on Monday afternoon as the University of Rochester defeated SUNY Oneonta, 15-13, in a women's lacrosse match at Red Dragon Field in Central New York.

The win is Rochester's second of the season and it snaps a three-match losing streak. Rochester is 2-3 overall, 0-2 in the Liberty League. UR plays a pair of road matches in the Liberty League this weekend, facing Bard College on Friday afternoon and Vassar College on Saturday afternoon. Oneonta is 1-4 overall.

Rochester's scoring came from Lucy Haggerty, Emma Little, Grace Crochiere, Zoe Sullivan, Brooke Fiannaca, Gracie Giannettino, and Mia Perkell with two goals each. Christiana Ciaccio scored one goal, but it came at a very crucial time. Haggerty had two assists. Crochiere, Sullivan, Giannettino, and Perkell had one apiece.

UR scored four straight goals to end the third quarter with a 12-9 lead. Oneonta, which trailed by as much as 5-1 in the early going, fought back to a 7-7 tie at halftime. Fiannaca's bid for a hat trick was stopped just before the halftime whistle when Oneonta goalkeeper Courtney Gallagher made the save. Gallagher finished the match with 13 saves. Ava Saffren made seven stops for Rochester.

At the start of the second half, Giannettino scored in a man up situation, one of three such goals the Yellowjackets converted Monday. It put UR ahead, 8-7. Lauren Mancini and Marisse Evans scored two minutes apart to rally the Red Dragons into a 9-8 lead. It was the first time Oneonta led since the first two minutes when Tessa Hughes scored from the free position. Hughes led the Oneonta offense with six goals.

Emma Little
Little won six draws, caused four turnovers, and scored twice.

Haggerty equalized at 9-9 with a goal at 6:01. Little scored from the free position at 3:56 to put UR ahead, 10-9. Sullivan (from Crochiere) and then Crochiere along scored 10 seconds apart late in the period for a 12-9 edge heading into the last 15 minutes.

Isabella Marx and Hughes scored 56 seconds apart to start the fourth. That got the hosts within 12-11. Perkell scored from the free position with 11:10 to go. It ignited a three goals-in-3:42 sequence with Ciaccio made it 14-11 and Little (from Haggerty) boosting the edge to 15-11 halfway through the period. Oneonta did not score again until the last two minutes – one with 1:56 left and the other with 16 seconds remaining.

Officials awarded 16 free position shots – 10 to Rochester (UR converted five) and six to Oneonta (the Dragons scored four times). Rochester was successful on 19 of 21 clearing attempts, a perfect 9-9 in the second half. Oneonta cleared 20 of 27.
