Clarkson Has Two Key Scoring Rallies in Lax victory over Rochester

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Clarkson University assembled two scoring runs in the second half to turn the tide and posted a 17-11 women's lacrosse victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon in the North Country.
 
The win boosted Clarkson's overall record to 9-3, 4-3 in the Liberty League. Rochester's record slipped to 5-6 overall, 2-5 in the league.
 
Grace Crochiere and Gracie Giannettino led the Yellowjackets with three goals apiece. Brook Fiannaca scored two goals. Lucy Haggerty, Emma Little, and Mia Perkell scored one goal each. Seven women scored for the Golden Knights. Grace Hagberg and Hailey Millington were the leaders with four apiece.
 
Rochester was effective from the free position. The Yellowjackets scored six goals on seven shots. Crochiere and Fiannaca were 2-2, Giannettino was 1-1, and Little scored once in two tries. Clarkson attempted 13 free position shots and scored on six of them.
 
In goal, Ava Saffren made 12 saves in 60 minutes for Rochester. For Clarkson, Sydney Christiansen made nine saves and allowed 10 goals in 59:01. Laura Wing played 59 seconds and allowed one goal plus made one save.
 
UR won 17 draw controls to 14 for the hosts. Little captured nine. Haggerty and Crochiere had three apiece. Perkell had the other two. She had Rochester's only assist.
 
Clarkson led, 3-1, through the first eight minutes. Rochester scored four consecutive goals – two by Giannettino, one by Haggerty, and one from Perkell when the Yellowjackets were playing down one person. The short-handed goal, scored with 11:20 left in the second quarter, put Rochester ahead, 5-3. Clarkson fought back to a 6-6 tie before Little scored 14 seconds before halftime for a 7-6 Rochester edge.
 
That fired up the Knights who scored the first six goals of the third period to build a 12-7 lead with 23 seconds left in the quarter. A goal by Fiannaca (with one second left in the third period) plus a tally from Giannettino one minute into the final quarter, lifted Rochester within 12-9. CU scored twice within 25 seconds and added another three minutes later for a 15-9 lead with 9:45 remaining.
 
Rochester will complete its home schedule this coming weekend. The Yellowjackets will host Skidmore on Friday afternoon at 4 pm and then play against RPI on Saturday at 2 pm. That will be senior day at the Prince Athletic Complex.
