ROME, NY – The University of Rochester women's rowing team placed third of five schools in racing among some highly ranked schools in Division III last weekend along the Erie Canal.
Rochester's women, who are among others receiving votes in the latest Division III coaches poll put out by the CRCA, qualified for the 1st Varsity 8 Grand Final in Saturday's racing after defeating Liberty League rival St. Lawrence in a head-to-head heat two.
UR's varsity 8 traveled the 2000-meter course in 7:43.97, nearly nine seconds ahead of the Saints who posted a time of 7:52.91.
In the heats of the 2V8 boats, Rochester was defeated by Wellesley in a head-to-head race, falling 7:38.50 to 7:58.01.
Rochester's final entry in the early session was a 3V8 entry, where the Yellowjackets were second of three boats in its heat and fifth overall. Smith B defeated UR in its heat with a time of 7:55.39, while Rochester's 3V clocked in at 8:38.76. Vassar rounded out the heat with a time of 9:22.40.
In the afternoon finals racing, both the 1V and 2V raced. Rochester's 1st Varsity 8 ended third in the grand final with a time of 7:52.50. Wellesley, ranked #1 in Division III in the latest poll, took the title with a time of 7:24.88, while Hamilton, current #9 team in Division III, was second in 7:39.39.
Rochester's 2V was third in the Petite Final with a time of 8:18.80, dropping behind Smith's A (7:59.51) and B (8:14.31) squads.
