Procaccino, Vennam Lead UR Men Past RIT

The Rochester men's tennis team posted wins in five of six singles matches to earn a hard-fought 6-3 victory over crosstown rival RIT on Saturday afternoon at the Goergen Athletic Center.

Rochester (6-4), winners of four straight and five of its last six matches, had two double-winners in Pasquale Procaccino and Krish Vennam on Saturday. RIT falls to 5-6 on the season.

The match was initially supposed to be played at RIT, but the less than ideal playing weather outside forced the move over to UR's indoor courts.

Visiting RIT ended up taking the early lead with a 2-1 record in doubles. Rochester's team of Procaccino and Vennam won the opening point at second doubles with an 8-1 win over Joel Pho and Carter Casimir. RIT responded with wins from its first and double doubles pair to head to singles with the advantage.

Procaccino opened up singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 win at #1 over Christian Berko, pulling Rochester even in the overall match.

RIT edged back in front though, following a 6-3, 6-3 win from Grahith Movva at #2 against Runjia Fang.

The Yellowjackets finished off the win with four straight points to reach the 6-3 final score. Kai Yuminaga and Vennam put Rochester up 4-3 with wins at #4 and #3, respectively. Yuminaga won 6-2, 6-1 against Pho, while Vennam topped Jake Wolicki 6-3, 6-2.

Senior Adrian Zhang won the clinching point at fifth singles, defeating Max Chang 6-1, 6-3, and Kei Ogawa completed the comeback with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #6 over Casimir.

UR's next match, its final home contest of the season, is set for Wednesday against Hobart starting at 4 pm.
