Brandeis Trips Up Rochester Men For Second Time This Season

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – For the second straight day, the vaunted University Athletic Association men's tennis tournament showed its strength as Brandeis University powered past the University of Rochester 5-0 in the consolation round at Sanlando Park.

Brandeis, ranked #14 in the latest Division III poll, earns its second win over Rochester this season, improving to 11-6. The Yellowjackets drop to 7-8 with the loss.

First-year player Krish Vennam had the most success among UR's men on Friday, earning a set win in his singles match at #3 against Brandeis' Dylan Walters. Vennam won the opening set 6-4 and was down 1-0 when the match reached its completion after the Judges captured the fifth team point.

Brandeis swept through doubles play with a pair of 8-2 wins at first and third doubles, while Vennam and Pasquale Procaccino dropped an 8-3 decision at second doubles to Walters and Hunter Levine.

UR's top doubles combo of Kai Yuminaga and Runjia Fang drew a tough opponent, as the team of Jeff Chen and Adam Tzeng are nationally ranked #15 in Division III and #3 in the Northeast region. Adrian Zhang and Kenneth Lee were Rochester's third doubles pair against the team of Aryan Nijhawan and Colt Tegtmeier.

In singles, Brandeis clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory from Chen over Procaccino at #2 and a 6-1, 6-0 triumph by Chen Liang at #6 over Kei Ogawa.

Fang was hanging tough at first singles with regionally ranked Tzeng, falling just 6-4 in the first set, with the UR senior sitting up 2-1 in the second when the match concluded. At five, Zhang lost the opening set 6-4 to Simon Kauppila and Yuminaga dropped the opening set 6-1 to Tegtmeier at number four.

The Yellowjacket face off against NYU on Saturday morning at 8:30 am for seventh place.
