NIAGARA, NY – Division I foe Niagara University posted a shutout victory over the University of Rochester men's tennis team on Friday, winning 7-0 at the Niagara Tennis Courts.
Rochester (6-6) held their own against the Purple Eagles (11-7), particularly in singles play as three of the six matches went to three sets.
Runjia Fang at #1,
Krish Vennam at #3 and
Kai Yuminaga at #4 all posted a set win and took their opponents to a third set tiebreaker, but all ultimately dropped their points in the extra set.
Fang battled Trevor Masi at the top spot, winning the first set 6-3. Masi returned the favor with a 6-1 win in the second and edged out a 10-5 victory in the tiebreaker. At four, Yuminaga was also a first set winner, defeating Jorge Sedeno 6-4. The Purple Eagles player battled back with 6-2 and 10-4 wins to earn the point.
Vennam's match was the closest third set score, with Tanner Bedard winning 12-10 in extra points. Vennam took the first set 6-1, with Bedard answering back with a 6-2 win to force the tiebreaker.
Niagara posted a 3-0 record in doubles to earn the single match point, as in Division I scoring, all three matches in doubles combined count as one point towards the team score. UR's #2 pair of Vennam and
Pasquale Procaccino put up the biggest fight with a 6-4 loss to William Gothlin and Manuel Alonso.
The Purple Eagles completed the 7-0 sweep with straight set wins in singles matches at positions two, five and six. Procaccino, at two against Alonso was even at 6-all in the first set, but fell 7-3 in the tiebreak. He lost 6-3 in the second.
Rochester completes its weekend of action with a Sunday road matchup at St. Lawrence University to complete the regular season slate.
