Rochester, St. John Fisher Play to a Scoreless Draw

PITTSFORD, NY – University of Rochester women's soccer and the St. John Fisher University Cardinals played to a scoreless draw on Wednesday at Growney Stadium.

Though the Yellowjackets peppered Avery Byrnes with five shots in the first 12 minutes, Bryres made three saves on shots by Robin de Jong, Grace Regenstreif and Mia McGinty, keeping Rochester off the scoreboard early.

The two sides then settled in for much of the first half, with St. John Fisher picking up their first shot on Jacqueline Gervais' high volley with 19:09 left in the period.

St. John Fisher would get their first shot on goal in the final few minutes of the frame, but Grace Kuropatkin kept her clean sheet with a save, sending the two sides into halftime without a goal.

The Yellowjackets earned an early corner to start the second half after Grover's second shot of the day was saved, but de Jong's 51st-minute shot was blocked, and the Cardinals successfully cleared to prevent any further opportunities.

UR then faced a pair of Cardinal corners over the next 20 minutes, but St. John Fisher wasn't able to challenge Kuropatkin with a shot on net.

In the final minutes, McGinty's shot in the 87th minute sailed high, before the ball found its way to Grover in the box in the 90th minute, but Byrnes made a tremendous save to preserve the draw.

Rochester and St. John Fisher both remain unbeaten with the result, with the Yellowjackets now at 3-0-2 on the year, and St. John Fisher at 2-0-2.

De Jong and Grover each led Rochester with three shots, while Kuropatkin made one save in 90 minutes in goal.

As a team, UR outshot St. John Fisher, 11-4, including 5-1 on goal.

The Yellowjackets return home for their next contest on Saturday, Sept. 17 against No. 6 William Smith College at 5 p.m. at Fauver Stadium.
