Rochester Battles 6th-ranked William Smith to a Scoreless Draw

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester women's soccer picked up their second-straight result, battling the No. 6-ranked William Smith College Herons to a scoreless draw on Saturday at Fauver Stadium.

Claire Grover got Herons' goalkeeper Amanda Kesler going early, with a shot on goal just under eight minutes into the match.

The two sides would trade early shots, as Grace Kuropatkin made a save of her own on the other end, keeping Emma Faso's 17th-minute shot out of the back of the net.

And while the Herons controlled possession for much of the first half, UR's defense held William Smith to just five first-half shots, with Kuropatkin notching two first-half saves.

After Kuropatkin made her second first-half save on Seneca Blakely-Armitage's shot in the 27th minute, Riya Kunderan peppered Kesler with a pair of shots on the other end, forcing the Herons' goalkeeper to make two more saves.

But neither shot made it through, and Grover's shot off a corner in the 41st minute went, and the two sides stood scoreless headed into the half.

Emma Bates picked up the first shot of the second half, forcing Kirsten Nelson to make her first save after William Smith made a halftime goalie change.

And on the counter, the Herons nearly found their first goal off the foot of Blakely-Armitage, but Emma Cohen helped keep her shot out of the back of the net with a team save, stopping a likely goal from the Herons' senior.

UR then started to pick things up offensively, with a 54th-minute corner, and a near goal off the foot of Grover in the 61st minute.

But neither side was able to find the back of the net, with the three goalkeepers combining for nine saves on 15 total shots.

Down to the waning moments, Kuropatkin saved Ireland Krawczyk's 87th-minute shot to keep things level, and the score stood at 0-0 when the final horn sounded.

Rochester moves to 3-0-3 with the draw, while William Smith picked up their first draw of the year at 3-1-1.

Grover led UR with three shots, while Kuropatkin made three saves in goal, putting together her second-straight clean sheet.

The Yellowjackets next host Keuka College on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
