Men’s Soccer Picks Up 2-1 Home Win over SUNY Geneseo

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester men's soccer bounced back from a weekend defeat to top SUNY Geneseo, 2-1, on Tuesday evening at Fauver Stadium.

The Knights started things off with an early corner kick, less than five minutes into the match, but in the 12th minute, Rochester found the back of the net to take an early lead.

Off a long throw, Colin Canning's header was stopped by Luke Bloom, but on the rebound, Joe Anderson found an opening into the top-right of the net with his header, giving UR a 1-0 lead just 11:08 into the first half.

The Yellowjackets would quickly look to add to their lead as they dominated the offensive zone for much of the first half. After back-to-back corners in the 16th and 17th minutes, Anderson's second shot of the day went high, but just minutes later Andrew Moglianesi blasted a shot towards the top of the net, with only Will Price's leaping save keeping UR from extending its one-goal lead.

Moglianesi picked up another shot on goal in the 31st minute, looking to find the inside, right-post, but again, Price made one of his six total saves.

Charlie Shanks got one more shot on goal before the end of the save, but Price made another save, and UR headed into the locker room up 1-0 after outshooting the Knights, 6-1.

Both sides picked up early offsides calls in the second half, before Tony Hypsher picked up another shot on goal, looking to extend UR's lead.

SUNY Geneseo then went on the counter, earning themselves a corner, and Tyler Lewandowski nearly made it 1-1, as his header was saved by Santino Lupica-Tondo.

Burke fired in another shot just minutes later, with his 69th minute shot yielding another save, as the 'Jackets fired a volley at Price over the next six minutes, with two shots by Burke, one by Moran and another by Avi Lamba, two of which were on goal.

On the counter, Lamba fired in a shot that Price saved but couldn't corral, and Hypsher then found the net on the rebound, extending UR's lead to 2-0 with just over 15 minutes to play.

Charlie Shanks then nearly made it 3-0, as off a great pass by Moglianesi, Shanks shot just sailed wide. Canning followed with a shot just outside as well, before the Knights cut into UR's two-goal lead.

With less than six minutes to play, SUNY Geneseo's Joe Vogt scored off Vasion Sinjari's free kick, beating Lupica-Tondo to the lower-right corner of the goal, and cutting Rochester's lead down to just one, with 5:22 to play.

Lewandowski would then get a shot to tie, but his 87th-minute shot sailed wide, and Rochester held on to finish off the 2-1 victory.

UR moves to 4-1-1 on the year with the win, while SUNY Geneseo falls to 6-2, their six-game win streak snapped.

Moglianesi and Hypsher each led UR with three shots, while Hypsher and Anderson tallied the Yellowjackets two goals.

Lamba picked up an assist, while Lupica-Tondomade had two saves in goal.

As a team, Rochester outshot SUNY Geneseo, 16-6, and had eight corner kicks vs. just five.

The Yellowjackets next head to Grantley, Pa. on Saturday, Sept. 24 for a matchup against York College of Pennslyvania at 1:30 p.m.
