YORK, PA – Though the Yellowjackets outshot the Spartans, 17-7, including 12-4 in the second half, the University of Rochester women's soccer fell to the York College of Pennsylvania Spartans, 1-0, on Saturday morning at Graham Field, dropping their first match of the season.
Both teams had a pair of early shots before Makayla Harper gave the Spartans an early lead. Taking advantage of a giveaway by UR's goalkeeper, Harper scored her third goal of the year just 12:40 into the first half to put York in front, 1-0.
And though the Yellowjackets would hold York without a shot the rest of the first half, UR wasn't able to find the equalizer and headed into halftime down 1-0.
Sam Hawkins picked up Rochester's first shot on goal in the 24th minute, a long-distance shot saved by Jacqueline Keogh, and just over 30 seconds later,
Carolyn Richards' shot sailed high.
In the 31st minute,
Claire Grover's first shot of the day was blocked, and
Robin de Jong's header in the 38th minute went wide left, keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of the Spartans.
UR continued peppering Spartans' goalkeeper Keogh with shots to start the second half, the first off the foot of
Savannah Berry in the 46th minute, and another from distance by
Megan Pung, but Keogh kept both shots out of the back of the net.
In the 53rd minute, Grover's header nearly found the back of the net, but again, Keogh made one of her seven saves to keep York out in front.
The Yellowjackets then had another chance just minutes later, as
Grace Regenstreif curled a cross into the box, but it just missed Berry's head, sailing out of bounds to keep York up a goal.
York got things going offensively in the 66th minute, but UR's defense kept the Spartans from extending their lead with a save.
Riya Kunderan's 67th-minute shot gave Keough another save, as the Spartans' goalkeeper sprawled out to prevent the equalizer. Mia McGinity then got a couple of shots off in the 81st and 85th minutes, but both went high, as UR pressed to tie the match in the waning moments.
Following a foul on Ashlynn Weger, the 'Jackets had one last opportunity, as Grover beat the defense and had a shot to tie, but Keogh just got a hand on it to force a corner, and the final buzzer sounded with York still up 1-0.
No. 24 Rochester drops to 4-1-3 with the loss, while York moves to 5-2-1 with the win.
Grover led UR with three shots, while Berry,
Lauren Carrico, Hawkins, McGinty and Kunderan each notched two.
In goal for the Yellowjackets, Kuropatkin made two saves but suffered her first loss of the year.
Rochester will look to bounce back when they return home to take on Houghton University on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 4 p.m. at Fauver Stadium.
