Rochester, St. John Fisher End Scoreless At Fauver

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – It was a hard fought matchup with chances on both sides, but neither team could find the net as the University of Rochester and St. John Fisher University men's soccer teams ended in a scoreless draw on Tuesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium

Rochester (5-1-2) held the advantage in shots, leading 16-7, and corners, leading 9-2, but a scrappy Cardinals defensive effort withstood the pressure.

The Yellowjackets moved back into the national poll at #22 in Division III ahead of the matchup. The tie is second in the last five meetings between the schools, with Rochester snapping a three-match win straight against the Cardinals (2-4-2).

Rochester's first shot of the game was a good look from 25 yards by Andrew Moglianesi after a turnover in the midfield, but the seniors kick sailed up over the crossbar.

Avi Lamba had the first shot on target in the game two minutes later for the Yellowjackets, but it was a tough angle attempt from the left side which was cut off by SJFU keeper Jadon Schlierf.

At the other end, St. John Fisher's first two corner kicks of the game yielded strong scoring chances for the Cardinals.

In the 14th minute, a direct corner shot by Stephen Guidi was punched away by Santino Lupica-Tondo in net.

Ten minutes later, the Cardinals Tim Brown headed a corner towards the goal but Rochester's Tyler Moran was in the right place on the goal line and headed the ball up and off the cross bar for a team save. A follow up bicycle kick by Parker Hotchkiss sailed high.

UR nearly went ahead in the 29th minute, but Mikey Burke's shot clanged off the right post after a long free kick was sent into the scoring area.

Kol Bassuk had a strong header shot off a corner kick in the 32nd minute, but again Schlierf was on top of the ball quickly, making the save to keep the game scoreless.

On the Cardinals counter, Reese Powers gained possession at the crease after a bouncing ball got loose in the box, but his shot was rushed and slipped wide of the left post.

St. John Fisher's Riley Rease had another point blank chance for the Cardinals, this one saved with just over ten minutes remaining in the half.

In the second half, Rochester controlled most of the play, holding St. John Fisher to just two shots, eventually leading to a possession advantage at the end of the contest of 63% to 37%.

A Rochester yellow card in the 61st minute set up the Cardinals in a good scoring position 28 yards out. Jackson Bishop stepped up and unleashed a rocket on goal, but Lupica-Tondo was there to make one of his four saves diving to his left, keeping the game knotted at 0-0.

With just under 15 minutes left, UR's Bassuk dribbled through the middle of the SJFU defense and ripped a hard shot on goal which was saved cleanly by Schlierf.

As the clocked ticked down under a minute, a late foul near the box gave Rochester a free kick in a good scoring location, but the Cardinals defense cleared up the set piece, preserving the tie.

Rochester's next test will be the University Athletic Association opener on Sunday morning against #1 University of Chicago.
