‘Jackets Tie Carnegie Mellon, 2-2

PITTSBURGH, PA – University of Rochester men's soccer earned its first result of conference play, battling Carnegie Mellon to a 2-2 stalemate on Saturday at the CMU Soccer Field.

While the Tartans would take the game's first shot, Brendan Schonwetter's wide attempt a little over five minutes into the match, UR would put the first shot on goal in the 24th minute.

Following a pair of Yellowjacket corners and a CMU turnover in the midfield, Charlie Shanks headed Santi Ponce Ocampo's cross towards goal, but Liam Ryan made his first of four saves to keep the game scoreless.

A short while later, Kol Bassuk's shot off a UR corner went wide, while in the 37th minute, Ashton Prescott saw his shot block, setting up another Yellowjacket corner, their fourth of the first half.

Meanwhile, Rochester's defense held the Tartans to just three first-half shots, all of which went wide, and held CMU without a shot for nearly 20 minutes, before Billy Boucuvalas sent one wide of the mark in the 43rd minute.

In the final minutes of the first, Prescott would send another volley at Ryan, this time forcing a save before a Rochester throw-in set up the game's first goal.

With less than 10 seconds left, Bassuk launched a throw-in into the box for Jeremiah Anandarajah, who headed it into the six-yard box for Nick Swanger, who poked it into the back of the net for a UR goal and a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets would take a one-goal lead into the locker room and looked to add to their lead to start the second. But after early attempts from Swanger and Ponce Ocampo were blocked and saved, with Ponce Ocampo's coming on a dangerous free kick from atop the box, the Tartans found the equalizer.

On a bouncing ball in the box following a cross from Schonwetter, Josh Baugh beat Santino Lupica Tondo, scoring off a deflection that the 'Jackets couldn't clear to level the score at 1-1 in the 57th minute.

Rochester then looked to answer but Tyler Moran's 64th minute shot off a corner was blocked, while Lupica-Tondo picked up his first save to keep the score knotted at one in the 75th minute.

Carnegie Mellon earned its first corner of the game in the 75th minute and after it was knocked away by the 'Jacket defense, a cross found Dominic Hoar-Weiler and a header, but Lupica-Tondo made the save.

Then in the 78th minute, UR had another opportunity, with Elijose Araujo on a takeaway, but Ryan came up with the save to keep things level at 1-1.

Finally, though, in the 83rd minute, the Yellowjackets would break through off the foot of Ponce Ocampo, as Shanks' centering pass found a sliding Ponce Ocampo, and the senior beat Ryan to make it a 2-1 Rochester advantage.

Once again, the 'Jackets lead would be short-lived, with Carnegie Mellon finding the equalizer four minutes later to even things up at two-all.

In the 87th minute, a yellow card gave CMU a free kick a few yards out from the top of the box, which Baugh chipped into the box. Hoar-Weiler was there for the header, finding the top-left corner to draw level with the 'Jackets, 2-2.

And though Carnegie Mellon looked for one last chance with a corner in the 88th minute, neither team would get a shot off before the final buzzer deadlocked at 2-2.

Rochester moves to 6-1-4 (0-1-1 UAA) with the draw, while Carnegie Mellon moves to 7-1-3 (0-0-2 UAA).

As a team, Rochester outshot Carnegie Mellon, 12-8, and 6-5 on goal, and also tallied seven corners compared to just two for CMU.

Individually, Ponce Ocampo and Swanger each scored for UR, with Anandarajah, Bassuk and Shanks earning the assists. Ponce Ocampo and Swanger, along with Moran, Prescott and Shanks, each tallied two shots to lead the 'Jackets.

The Yellowjackets next return to Rochester, NY to begin a stretch of three-straight, home conference contests, starting with a matchup against Case Western Reserve on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m.
