Eight Football Players Score CSC Academic All-District Honors

Eight members of the University of Rochester football team: graduate Bradley Beckwith, seniors Trey Johnson and Simon Weeren, juniors Happy Chane, Jordan Laudani and Ryan Rose and sophomores Jackson Kane and Jordy Tawa, earned College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Honors, as announced by the CSC on Tuesday.
 
The 2023 CSC Academic All-District® Football Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. To be nominated, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore academically and athletically, have at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average and must have competed in at least 90 percent or must have started at least 66 percent of an institution's contests.
 
All eight of Rochester's honorees were key members of UR's 2023 team, helping the Yellowjackets to a 5-5 (2-4 LL) record against one of the toughest schedules in the country, their highest win total since 2015.
 
Beckwith, a three-year team captain, capped off his fifth year with the Yellowjackets with his second-straight D3football.com All-Region honor, earning Third-Team All-Region honors after taking home First-Team All-Liberty League honors for the second-consecutive year. The graduate lineman finished second on the team with 61.0 tackles (21 solo), adding two tackles for a loss and a quarterback hit and earned his third-consecutive CSC Academic All-District honor.
 
Off the field, Beckwith is a four-time Liberty League All-Academic Team member, a two-time UAA All-Academic selection and was awarded the 2022-23 John Vitone Sportsmanship Award at the UR Athletics Banquet last spring. Beckwith is also a member of the Medallion Leadership Program, earned Dean's List honors throughout his college career and volunteered with the football team throughout his time at UR. An undergraduate history major, Beckwith is currently enrolled in the Warner School of Education in the Adolescence Education Program.
 
Johnson also earned his second Academic All-District selection after leading the Yellowjackets in receiving this year. The senior caught 74 receptions for 727 yards and four touchdowns, earning Second-Team All-Liberty League honors. Johnson's 74 receptions led the Liberty League and are the second-most in a single season in program history, while the seniors' 7.4 receptions per game ranked in the top 20 in DIII.
 
A double major in economics and political science, Johnson interned for Sage Rutty & Co. and researched social issues and the formation of partisan politicians with Professor Gerald Gamm in the Political Science Department. The senior wideout is also a three-year member of the Liberty League All-Academic Team, and graduates as UR's all-time leader in receptions per game (4.83) and tied for seventh in total catches.
 
Weeren makes his second-straight appearance on the CSC Academic All-District team after finishing the year with 56.0 tackles (33 solo), five pass breakups, a tackle for a loss and an interception. A political science and economics double major, Weeren also earned his third-straight Liberty League All-Academic nod and was a 2022 Second-Team All-Liberty League honoree.
 
Outside of football, Weeren has done research with Professor Gamm on campus, researching state legislative action on early bills dealing with LGBTQ+ issues from 1960-80, and interned with Lot Sixteen, a lobbying and communications firm in Washington DC this past summer. The Leesburg, VA has also volunteered back home with both the Varsity Club and National Honor Society.
 
Chane earns Academic All-District honors after leading the Yellowjackets in tackles with 85.0 (40 solo) the third-most in the conference. Chane started every game at linebacker for UR, tallying 3.5 tackles for a loss, four quarterback hits, one sack, a forced fumble, and a blocked punt to go along with his 85 tackles. An Honorable Mention All-Liberty League selection, Chane ranked in the top 100 in Division III in tackles per game, tallying 10+ in four contests.
 
Academically, Chane, a biomedical engineering major with a double minor in chemistry and psychology, is a two-time Liberty League All-Academic selection, a four-time OSMA Academic Achievement Award recipient and a three-year member of the Dean's List. Chane is currently an intern for the Emergency Department Research Assistant program and also volunteers at the Golisano Children's Hospital.
 
UR's primary placekicker, Laudani was a perfect 27-for-27 on extra points and connected on 11-of-16 field goals, with a long of 44 yards. The junior made three field goals twice, in Liberty League matchups against St. Lawrence and Hobart, and averaged 54.4 yards per kickoff, kicking nine touchbacks. Heading into his senior year, Laudani ranks second in program history in both field goals made (19) and attempted (31), and third in point-after kick percentage (93.3%).
 
Majoring in economics and psychology with a minor in business, Laudani is a member of UR's Black Student Athlete Coalition's executive board and interned as an associate at Lead Advisor, LLC. A two-time Liberty League All-Academic selection and a Dean's List honoree, Laudani earns his second CSC Academic All-District honor.
 
Rose started all 10 games for the Yellowjackets under center, completing 191 of his 325 attempts for 1,973 yards and 14 touchdowns, adding 24 rushes for 52 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Rose ranked second in the conference and top 100 in DIII in passing, while his 191 completions set a new single-season record.
 
Away from the turf, Rose is a two-time Liberty League All-Academic Team member and has earned Dean's List every semester. A business finance major with minors in legal studies and economics, Rose interned with Trackhouse Racing in business operations and sponsor relations and researched political science with Professor Gamm on campus, looking at the characteristics of members of the legislature in
the late 1960's to early 1970's.
 
Kane caught 18 passes for 216 yards and three touchdowns, starting every game for the 'Jackets this season at tight end en route to Second-Team All-Liberty League honors. The sophomore was also a key blocker for UR's rushing attack that averaged nearly 150 yards on the ground this season and added a 20 rush on a fake punt against Hobart.
 
The Boring, OR native is a double major in psychology and economics with a minor in statistics. Outside of football, Kane is a member of Rochester's VSAAC, TAed ECON-108, and works on research with Professor Gamm in the political science department, exploring contemporary political polarization. For his work in the classroom, Kane also received both Liberty League All-Academic honors and Dean's List this year and is also a Schwartz Scholar and earned the Marty-Brill Memorial Award.
 
A Second-Team All-Liberty League selection, Tawa started every game at cornerback for UR, finishing third on the team with 59.0 tackles (44 solo) to go along with 12 pass breakups, a mark that led the conference and ranked 14th in Division III, three interceptions and 1.5 tackles for a loss.
 
Off the field, Tawa, a psychology major, earned Liberty League All-Academic honors this season and plans on doing research with Professor Gamm next semester. He has also been an active member of Hands Helping Hands, an Oregon volunteer group for several years.
 
Academic All-District selections will be evaluated by a sub-committee and advanced to the national, All-America ballot, to be voted on by CSC members within their respective divisions.
