BUFFALO, NY – The Division I University of Buffalo women's tennis team captured a shutout victory over the University of Rochester on Saturday afternoon, winning 7-0 at the Miller Tennis Center.
Rochester moves to 1-3 on the season with the loss and is now off until the teams spring break trip to Florida in early March. The host Bulls improve to 8-3 on the season.
Buffalo was strong in doubles, earning the point in the pairs play with two 6-0 wins and a 6-1 win at #1. Rochester's top pair of
Josephine Libby and
Sanjana Karnam fell to Azra Deniz Comlek and Deanne Choo. At number two,
Rola Abouzeina and
Stephanie Kim fell to Pia Schwarz and Ambre Amat and in the three spot,
Jaclyn Dron and
Neha Dania lost to Mariana Carvajal Torres and Lolina Schietekat Sedas.
In singles, UB earned six straight set wins. Comlek topped Karnam for the opening point, winning 6-1, 6-0 at number two. Amat followed with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout against Toor in the three spot, setting up Carvajal Torres for the clinching point at number four. She topped Dania by a 6-1, 6-2 score.
Schietekat Sedas kept things going for Buffalo at number six with a 6-0, 6-3 win against Kim. Abouzeina battled Choo to a 6-4 loss in the opening set, matching UR's best set result on the day, but was swept after she lost in the next set 6-1.
Finishing off the match, Libby took six total games against Akbas Basak at the top spot, but ultimately dropped a straight set decision, 6-2, 6-4.
