CANTON, NY – Trailing by six after the opening quarter, University of Rochester women's lacrosse roared back, pulling within a goal early on in the fourth, but No. 19 St. Lawrence prevented UR from getting any closer and scored two goals late to hold on for a 14-11 victory.
Lucy Haggerty tied the single-game program record for assists in the loss, tallying a career-high five and adding a goal for six points on the afternoon.
Charlotte Powell got the Saints going, as St. Lawrence scored six-straight to open the first quarter, jumping out to an early 6-0 lead after one.
SLU's defense held the Yellowjackets to just three shots in the first period, but Grace Corchiere would quickly get UR's offense going in the second, scoring off Haggerty's first assist of the afternoon just 41 seconds into the quarter to cut St. Lawrence's lead to 6-1.
But St. Lawrence quickly came up with an answer, extending its lead back to six on Jacqui Cloutier's 18-minute score from Powell.
The Yellowjackets though, would win the ensuing draw control and settle things down, holding the Saints scoreless for nearly 13 minutes, before Grace Giannettino and the 'Jackets found the back of the net with 27 seconds left in the first half.
But Powell and the Saints again answered quickly, with Powell notching her third goal of the first half with just 13 seconds left in the half to send St. Lawrence into halftime with an 8-2 lead.
Rochester though, quickly got their offense going to start the third, with Haggerty cutting the deficit to five with 13:20 left in the frame. SLU answered just under a minute later, but the 'Jackets then fired off a pair in quick succession, with Crochiere netting a pair of assists from Haggerty to pull UR within four.
The Saints would bring their lead back to five with two scores over the next four minutes, before the 'Jackets would end the third quarter on a 4-1 run, pulling within three on
Alyssa Gorny's free-position goal with just seconds left in the third.
Giannettino got UR's run started with a free-position goal with 6:06 to play in the third before Gorny added another goal from Haggerty with 3:12 left. UR then won the draw control and earned themselves a free-position shot, while Giannettino put in the back of the net to make it an 11-8 St. Lawrence lead.
The Saints would sneak one past
Emily Geiss to extend their lead back to four, before Gorny beat the buzzer with her free-position shot, cutting the Saints' lead to just three, 12-9, after three.
Rochester then pulled within one to start the fourth, with
Emma Little finishing off Haggerty's fifth assist, and
Zoe Sullivan scoring off Giannettino's assist with 12:20 left in the fourth.
But St. Lawrence's defense would clamp down and hold UR without a score the rest of the way, forcing six turnovers over the final 10 minutes of play.
Dana Fernandez would give the Saints a bit of breathing room with her score with 6:25 left before a late goal from Cloutier helped #19 St. Lawrence eke out the 14-11 victory.
UR drops to 3-3 (0-2 LL) with the loss, with the 19th-ranked Saints move to 2-2 (1-0 LL) with the win.
Haggerty led Rochester with six points, tying the single-game record with five assists, while Crochiere and Giannettino each tallied hat tricks, with Giannettino adding an assist.
Crochiere also added a team-high seven draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
In goal for the 'Jackets,
Ava Saffren allowed eight goals over the first 30 minutes, while Geiss took the loss, making five saves and allowing six goals over the final 30 minutes of play.
Rochester next heads to Clinton, NY for a non-conference matchup against Hamilton College on Tuesday, March 21 at 4:00 p.m., before returning home for a pair of conference contests against Bard and Vassar on March 24 & 25.
