Haggerty’s Game Winner Nets UR 12-11 Victory over Vassar

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – Trailing 11-9 with just over 10 minutes remaining, University of Rochester women's lacrosse scored three goals over the next six and a half minutes and shutout the Vassar College Brewers on defense the rest of the way to earn their first conference victory by the final score of 12-11 on Saturday at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Alyssa Gorny's unassisted score leveled the match at 11-all with eight minutes to play in regulation, before Lucy Haggerty notched her second goal of the fourth, picking up a loose ball behind the net and firing a shot just out of the reach of Lauren Johns to give UR a 12-11 lead.

Grace Crochiere got the scoring started for both sides with 11:54 to play in the first, as Haggerty found the Wilbraham, MA native to give Rochester an early lead.

Later on in the first, Gorny made it 2-0 with a free-position score, before Maddy Kretten got the Brewers on the scoreboard with her 20th goal of the year.

Lorelei King scored her first of four goals on the afternoon with 4:37 remaining in the first to extend the 'Jackets' lead to 3-1 before a quick answer from Kali Ringer off Annie Uyeki's assist cut Rochester's lead back to 3-2.

With two minutes to play in the first, Emma Little again gave the Yellowjackets a two-score lead, finishing a free-position shot, but Kretten beat the buzzer with her second score of the period, cutting the 'Jackets' lead back to one with 26 seconds left in the opening period.

The Brewers then quickly tied things up in the second on Reilly MulCahy's score, but back-to-back goals by King and Haggerty, once again gave the 'Jackets a two-goal, 6-4, lead with 11:31 until the half.

Vassar would answer with a pair of their own, again tying the score at six with 7:07 to play in the first, and while King was able to answer with a 21st-minute score from Little, the Brewers would add to more goals before the halftime buzzer, taking their first lead of the afternoon with 1:04 left in the second.

Up 8-7 to start the third, Vassar extend its lead to 9-7 on Emma Torkelson's goal just over six minutes into the stanza, before two quick ones from Rochester, Gracie Giannettino's free-position goal with 2:15 left, and King's fourth of the day with 1:39 to play, again leveled the score at nine-all.

But Torkelson would net another before the end of the third, and Vassar would add another with 10:38 to play, extending their lead to 11-9.

However, Haggerty scored her second just over 30 seconds later to put UR back within one, before Gorny tied it up with eight minutes until the final buzzer.

Then after Brooke Fiannaca's shot was saved, Haggerty corralled and scored on the rebound, giving the 'Jackets a 12-11 advantage with 4:40 left.

Down the stretch, Vassar would get just one shot off, a free-position shot by Kali Ringler that Emily Geiss saved to give Rochester the ball back.

The 'Jackets would call a timeout with 1:43 left, and wind the clock all the way down to 1:09 before Little's shot was saved by Johns.

However, after Vassar picked up the ground ball, Crochiere intercepted Tess Billing's pass and UR held the ball for the final 35 seconds to seal the victory.

The 'Jackets pick up their first conference win, moving to 4-4 (1-2 LL) on the year, while Vassar falls to 4-2 (1-1 LL).

King led all scorers with four goals, while Haggerty tallied a team-high five points with three goals and two assists.

Defensively, Gorny recorded a team-high eight ground balls, while Abbey Smith's six caused turnovers tied for the most in a single game in program history.

In goal for UR, Geiss made seven saves to pick up the win, the most crucial being a free-position save with 2:04 left that would've tied the game at 12.

As a team, Rochester outshot Vassar, 32-25, and picked up 32 ground balls compared to just 18 for the Brewers.

The Yellowjackets next make the short trip to Henrietta, NY for a conference clash against RIT on Wednesday, March 29 at 4:00 p.m.
