HENRIETTA, NY –
Alyssa Gorny scored a career-high five goals and University of Rochester women's lacrosse won its second-straight Liberty League contest, defeating the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers, 13-10, on Wednesday afternoon at Tiger Stadium.
Serafina Kiselgof would get the Tigers on the scoreboard first off Zoe Heffernan's assist with 13:16 to play in the first. But
Lorelei King and the Yellowjackets quickly knotted the score up with the first-year's score just 14 seconds later, as
Emma Little won the draw control and found King after a foul to level the match at one-all.
Gorny then scored her first of a career-high five goals, giving UR a 2-1 lead it'd never relinquish off a free-position attempt with 11:33 remaining in the first.
Kate Trojan and the Tigers tied things up just a couple minutes later with a free-position shot of their own, but Gorny added another, this time off Little's second assist of the afternoon, to give UR a 3-2 lead after one.
Gorny then kept things rolling into the second quarter, scoring her third with 12:43 until the halftime buzzer, following a save by
Emily Geiss. The 'Jackets goalie made eight first-half saves, holding RIT to just four goals in the first half.
The Tigers would pull back within one with 8:15 to play in the period, but two goals by Little and
Gracie Giannettino in the span of less than a minute put UR up three, its largest lead of the game so far.
Trojan and the Tigers would get one more score before the halftime buzzer, answering Giannettino's score with one of their own with just over six minutes until the half, but Geiss and UR's defense kept RIT from getting any closer, while Gorny added another with 1:05 left in the half to send Rochester into the locker room with a three-goal, 7-4 lead.
RIT got the scoring started in the third quarter, but with goals from Gorny and Giannettino, the 'Jackets had an answer and kept their lead at three with 9:06 to play.
The Tigers though, then made their run, scoring three goals over the next 3:39 to even the match a 9-all with 5:02 left in the third.
However, after UR won the ensuing draw control, UR did RIT one better, scoring three goals in less than two minutes to extend their lead back to three.
Giannettino scored off
Grace Crochiere's draw control to retake the lead, 10-9, with 4:26 left in the third, before Crochiere again won the draw control and Little made it 11-9 with 3:15 until the fourth.
Then Crochiere won a third-consecutive draw control and this time, finished it herself, scoring a free-position goal to again make it a three-goal lead for Rochester, 12-9, heading to the fourth.
UR's defense held RIT without a score for the final five minutes of the third and kept things rolling into the fourth, keeping the Tigers off the scoreboard again till the 5:18 mark of the final frame.
Crochiere added another with 7:54 to play in the fourth before Julia Tenney pulled RIT back within three, but again UR's defense would lock down, holding RIT without a shot the rest of the way and to just two shots on goal total in the fourth to seal the 13-10 victory.
Rochester moves to 5-4 (2-2 LL) with the win, while RIT falls to 3-4 (1-2 LL) with the loss.
Gorny led all scorers with a career-high five goals, while Little added two goals and two assists for five total points. Giannettino added three goals, while Crochiere notched a team-high six draw controls.
Defensively, three 'Jackets: Christina Ciaccio, Crochiere and Geiss each tallied three ground balls while
Abbey Smith led UR with three caused turnovers. In goal, Geiss earned the win, tallying 11 saves.
As a team, Rochester outshot RIT, 29-27, and 23-21 on goal. Both teams also tallied 14 draw controls, while RIT held a one ground-ball edge, 22-21.
Rochester will look to make it three straight when they take a break from conference play on Friday, March 31, hosting Oneonta in a non-conference matchup at Edwin Fauver Stadium at 4:00 p.m.
