‘Jackets Never Trail in 21-14 Win over Oneonta

PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – University of Rochester women's lacrosse led wire-to-wire en route to their third-straight win, topping the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons, 21-14, on Friday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

Just 55 seconds into the match, Lucy Haggerty got the scoring started, scoring her first of four goals on the evening off a free-position shot to give UR an early 1-0 lead.

And then after the Red Dragons sailed a pair of shots high and Emily Geiss made the first of seven saves, the Yellowjackets doubled their lead on Alyssa Gorny's unassisted score with 10:32 to play in the first.

Megan Foiles got Oneonta on the scoreboard with a sixth-minute, free-position goal, but the 'Jackets kept on rolling, adding four more to their tally over the next five minutes to extend their lead to 6-1.

Haggerty got on the scoreboard again with 8:47 left in the first, before Emma Little scored her first goal of the evening, assisted by Gracie Giannettino, to make it a 4-1 game with 5:57 remaining in the opening period.

Lorelei King and Giannettino then scored a pair in quick succession, as King finished off Haggerty's assist and won the ensuing draw control before Giannettino made it 6-1 with just under four and a half left in the first.

Ellie Downey and the Red Dragons would get on the scoreboard one more time in the opening period, but Giannettino answered off another Haggerty assist with 26 seconds left, sending UR into the second quarter with a five-goal, 7-2, lead.

Oneota would get the scoring started in the second, scoring two of the first three goals of the stanza to cut into Rochester's lead, but another two goals from Little and Gorny brought the lead back out to six, 10-4, with 5:55 until the halftime buzzer.

Another Red Dragon run would pull Oneonta within three on Foiles' score with 1:24 left in the second, but Haggerty beat the buzzer off King's assist, scoring with one second left on the clock to give UR an 11-7 lead at the half.

Foiles again pulled Oneonta within three to start the third, but that would be as close as the Red Dragons would get the rest of the way.

Haggerty answered Foiles' goal with one of her own, putting Rochester back up four, 12-8, with 13:56 left in the third.

Then Grace Crochiere and the Yellowjackets took advantage of a Red Dragon penalty, scoring a woman-up goal to make it a 13-8 advantage.

And down the stretch of the third, UR equaled Oneonta goal-for-goal, with the 'Jackets and Red Dragons each tallying three as Rochester took a 16-11 lead into the fourth.

Gorny got things rolling for UR in the final frame, with a free-position goal a little over 30 seconds in, while Rochester's defense held Oneonta scoreless till the 8:33 mark of the fourth quarter.

Foiles scored again for Oneota with 8:33 to play, but two from UR from King with 6:08 left, and Giannettino with 5:14 to go extended Rochester's lead to 19-12, slowly putting the game out of reach for the Red Dragons.

Lauren Mancini cut the deficit again back to six with a free-position score with 4:31 remaining, but King again had an answer, and with another late score from Gorny, UR would finish off the 21-14 victory.

Rochester moves to 6-4 with its third-straight win, while SUNY Oneonta falls to 2-5 on the year.

Gorny and Haggerty each led UR with seven points, with Gorny tallying six goals and an assist, and Haggerty notching four goals and three assists. King also scored four times, adding one assist for a total of five points.

Little led UR with nine draw controls, while Little and Crochiere each tallied a team-high four ground balls. As a team, Rochester tied a program record with 27 draw controls, originally set on March 10, 2009, vs. SUNY Oswego.

Defensively, Giannettino earned three caused turnovers, while Geiss notched seven saves.

Rochester next heads to Geneva, NY for a conference clash against No. 4 William Smith College on Saturday, April 8 at 1:00 p.m.
