UR Bested by No. 3 William Smith

GENEVA, NY – The University of Rochester women's lacrosse fell to the 3rd-ranked William Smith College Herons, 16-6, on Saturday at Urick Stadium, snapping their three-game winning streak.

Kaitlin Pellechia got the Herons on the scoreboard first off Chloe McGlynn's assist with 11:21 to play in the first, but The 'Jackets quickly answered William Smith's score with one of their own, as Lorelei King found the back of the net just under a minute later off Gracie Giannettino's assist to level the score at 1-1.

However, the 3rd-ranked Herons would score four unanswered to end the first quarter and added another just 39 seconds into the second to take a 6-1 lead before Rochester again got on the scoreboard.

Grace Crochiere netted UR's second goal of the afternoon, an unassisted goal with 10:54 to play in the first half, and while Rochester won the ensuing draw control, a turnover gave the ball right back to the Herons.

William Smith would then add four more before the halftime buzzer, taking a 10-2 lead at the break, before Maddie Montgomery made it 11-2 just under four minutes into the second half.

The 'Jackets would make a run, scoring three straight over the next seven minutes while holding the Herons scoreless to pull within six. Lucy Haggerty got the run going off another Haggerty assist before Gorny scored off Emma Little's rebound to cut William Smith's lead to 11-4.

Just over a minute later, King again found the back of the net, this time off Brooke Fiannaca's assist, to make it an 11-5 ballgame, but the Herons would pull away with two late scores in the third.

Little got the Yellowjackets on the scoreboard to start the fourth, as UR's defense held the Herons without a goal till the eight-minute mark of the fourth, but William Smith would add three more scores before the final buzzer to finish off the 16-6 victory.

Rochester falls to 6-5 (2-3 LL) with the loss, while the No. 3-ranked Herons remain undefeated at 11-0 (5-0 LL) on the year.

King led UR with a pair of scores, while Giannettino tallied two assists. Defensively, Emily Geiss netted a team-high four ground balls, while Giannettino recorded a team-high three caused turnovers.

In goal, Geiss also made nine saves but took the loss.

The Yellowjackets will look to bounce back when they wrap up non-conference play against Morrisville State College on Wednesday, April 12 at 4:00 at Edwin Fauver Stadium.
