WALTHAM, MA – Conference foe Brandeis University held serve on its home courts on Saturday, defeating the University of Rochester women's tennis team 7-2 at the Gosman Athletic Center.
Brandeis (6-4), entered the weekend ranked #19 in the latest Division III poll, and got off to a solid start in doubles, earning the sweep for an early 3-0 lead.
Ella Chase and Nancy Zhang topped
Rola Abouzeina and
Jaclyn Dron 8-2 at #2, Bhakti Parwani and Rebecca Suarez added an 8-2 win at #1 over
Josephine Libby and
Sanjana Karnam, with the Brandeis #3 team of Cecilia Denis and Jiayi Zhang posting an 8-4 win over
Neha Dania and
Stephanie Kim.
Rochester took two points in singles, courtesy of Libby and Dania, at #1 and #5 respectively.
Libby made the score 3-1 with her 6-1, 6-4 win over Nancy Zhang at the top spot. UR's nationally ranked singles player (#25), rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the second set to earn the straight set victory.
Brandeis clinched the match shortly after Libby's victory though, getting a 7-5, 6-0 win from Phoebe Tamaoki at #2 over Karnam and from Anastasia Sia at #3 over
Jasmin Toor (7-6, 6-2).
After Chase topped Abouzeina 6-2, 7-5 at number four, Dania edged Jiayi Zhang in the lone three-set match of the day at number five.
Dania won the opening set 6-2, Zhang answered back with a 6-1 win, with Dania earning a close win in the tiebreaker set, winning 10-7.
To close out the match, Denis topped Kim in straight sets at #6, winning 6-3, 7-5.
Rochester finishes off its three-match week with a tilt against #35 Babson College on Sunday.
