ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – The University of Rochester men's tennis team fell by a 7-0 score at the hands of Division I Creighton University on Saturday afternoon at Sanlando Park, opening the teams' spring break schedule in Florida.
Creighton moves to 7-3 on its season schedule with the win, while Rochester falls to 1-3, dropping its third straight decision.
The Yellowjackets were able to hang tough in doubles, with #2 pair of
Krish Vennam and
Kei Ogawa forcing its match to a tiebreak, eventually falling to Kirtan Patel and Zack Maline 8-7 (7-2).
At the top doubles spot,
Kai Yuminaga and
Rahul Ravi battled to an 8-5 loss and
Kenneth Lee and Kavin Shukle fell 8-1 at the third spot in the order, allowing the Blue Jays to take the one doubles point.
In singles, it was six straight set wins for the Blue Jays to earn the shutout victory. Oscar Alvarez opened with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ravi at three. After wins at six and one in the order, Creighton had clinched the overall team match victory.
At two, Yuminaga dropped his match to Alejandro Gandini by a 6-3, 6-2 score, with
Surya Rajamani also scoring five game wins in his match, falling 6-4, 6-1 to Patel at five.
The final singles match was between Ogawa and Shin Inoue at number four, with Inoue edging out a tiebreak opening set 7-6 (7-4) before closing out the sweep with a 6-2 set two victory.
Rochester squares off with Wittenberg University in its second Florida match on Tuesday morning.
