ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – The University of Rochester men's tennis team picked up its second win of the season on Tuesday, defeating Wittenberg 8-1 at Sanlando Park.
UR improves to 2-3 on the year, snapping a modest 3-match losing streak. Wittenberg falls to 1-5 with the loss.
Three Yellowjackets were double-winners, led by
Kai Yuminaga,
Rahul Ravi and
Kenneth Lee. Yuminaga added the match clinching point in singles, posting a 6-2, 6-3 win at #2 against the Tigers John DeVito.
Rochester jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Yuminaga and Ravi paired for the opening point at first doubles, winning 8-4 over Joe Patton and Jake Stockhausen.
Wittenberg rebounded with a win at number two doubles from DeVito and Kyle Fout, as the Tiger duo defeated
Krish Vennam and
Kei Ogawa 8-6. At three, Lee and
Surya Rajamani put Rochester back in front with their 8-5 win over Mark Trinka and Ethan Libby.
After play switched to singles, Vennam made quick work of Patton at one, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Ogawa made it 4-1 Rochester after winning the first set of his #5 match against Libby 7-6 (7-3), with the Tiger player then retiring afterwards.
Yuminaga won the clincher and the remaining three matches all went to Rochester, leading to the 8-1 win.
Kavin Shukla won 6-4, 6-2 at four, Lee edged Fout 5-7, 6-2, 10-3 at six and Ravi closed the match with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 win at three.
UR wraps up its spring break schedule on Wednesday afternoon against Haverford College at the USTA Tennis Center in Orlando, Florida.
