BRONX, NY –
Krish Vennam and
Kai Yuminaga picked up wins at No. 1 and 2-singles, but the University of Rochester men's tennis fell to the New York University Violets, 7-2, at the Stadium Tennis Center on Saturday.
Vennam picked up a regionally-ranked win, defeating NYU's Alex Yang, ranked No. 13 in the Northeast Region, at the first singles match, 6-4, 1-6 (12-10); while Yuminaga earned a 6-2, 6-3, victory over the Violets' Zachary Freier at No. 2-singles.
The Violets though, got off to a hot start, winning all three doubles matches against the Yellowjackets. NYU's Andy Watterson and Alex Lee got things started at No. 3-doubles, topping UR's
Kenneth Lee and Ahaan Malhortra, 8-2, while Yang and Freier topped
Rahul Ravi and Yuminaga at the one-spot, 8-5.
NYU then finished off the doubles sweep, with Boren Zheng and Alex Lee winning the tiebreak over
Kavin Shukla and Vennam, 8-7 (7-3).
In singles action, Joseph He and Zheng clinched the victory for the Violets, with He topping Shuklha at the four spot, 6-2, 6-1; and Zheng downing Ravi at No. 3-singles, 6-4, 6-0, before Vennam and Yuminaga picked up their two victories.
The Violets then wrapped up the 7-2 victory with two more wins at five and six singles, where Rumaish Khastgir topped Kei Ogara in a close contest, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4); and Watterson defeated Malhotra, 6-2, 6-1.
With the loss, Rochester falls to 4-6 on the year, while NYU moves to 6-3.
The Yellowjackets will wrap up their weekend with a matchup against the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons on Sunday, April 2 at 12:00 p.m.
