ONEONTA, NY – The University of Rochester men's tennis team got back to its winning ways earning an 8-1 road victory over SUNY Oneonta on Sunday afternoon at the Heissan Tennis Courts.
UR's
Kai Yuminaga and
Kei Ogawa finished as double-winners for the Yellowjackets, who climbed back within one game of .500 on the season, moving to 5-6 overall on the year. Rochester snapped a 3-match losing streak, while the Red Dragons fall to 4-9 in 2022-23.
The Yellowjackets earned a 3-0 lead after doubles, going 8-1 at number one, 8-3 at number two and 8-6 at the third spot. Yuminaga and
Krish Vennam paired at the top spot,
Kenneth Lee and
Rahul Ravi made up the number two team and Ogawa and
John Hui were the third doubles winners.
During singles play, after a 6-1 win in the opening set, Yuminaga's opponent at #1 retired and put the Yellowjackets in front 4-0.
Ogawa followed by earning his third clinching point of the season, winning 6-2, 6-0 at third singles.
Alex Kulvivat won 6-3, 7-5 over Noah Khair at number four for the 6-0 UR lead, with Oneonta getting on the board with a win at number two. Ravi was upended in three sets by Mason Spottek 5-7, 6-4, 10-6.
Rochester took the final two points with
Sid Tirupati winning 6-0, 6-0 at five and
Zach Fox winning at number six 3-6, 6-1, 10-5.
The Yellowjackets return to the court on Wednesday, playing in a match on the road at Hobart College.
