First Doubles Team Picks Up Win Against Hobart

GENEVA, NY – The University of Rochester's first doubles team of Krish Vennam and Kai Yuminaga picked up a win against Hobart College, but the host Statesmen took the remaining eight matches to earn an 8-1 victory on Wednesday evening at the Bristol Field House in Division III men's tennis action.

Vennam and Yuminaga's win was a strong one, as the team they defeated, Jett Wright and Sean Pesin, were ranked #11 in the Northeast Region entering Wednesday's match. The Yellowjacket duo earned an 8-6 victory to help Rochester (5-7) pull within 2-1 down after doubles play.

Hobart (10-4) earned the other doubles points by 8-1 (3rd doubles) and 8-3 (2nd doubles) scores.

The momentum from UR's win at the top spot in doubles seemed to carry over as the Yellowjackets hung tight with the regionally ranked Hobart squad in singles.

During the first four singles matches, the opening sets were all within two games, and three of those needed an extra game to decide a winner. Vennam, Yuminaga and Kei Ogawa all were edged out 7-5 in their opening sets, while Rahul Ravi won the first set 6-4 in his match at number four.

Hobart turned the tide in those matches afterwards, with only Yuminaga swiping a set the rest of the way. In his match at number two he won the second 7-5 before falling 6-4 in the tightly played third set to Harry Lyu.

Ravi was upended at number three in the second and third frames 6-1 and 6-2 to drop his match against Winter Fagerberg.

Both Pesin at number one against Vennam and Hyat Oyer at four against Ogawa earned 6-1 wins in set two, earning straight set victories for the Statesmen.

In the final two matches on the lineup card, Kenneth Lee was topped at number five by Nick Fischer 6-2, 6-2, and Alex Kulvivat fell against Nick Grosso 6-1, 6-3 in the six spot.

UR's next match is a home contest against RIT on Thursday, April 13th.
