University of Rochester men's tennis took all three doubles matches en route to an 8-1 victory over the Rochester Institute of Technology Tigers on Thursday at the Lyman Tennis Center.
With the win, Rochester moves a game below .500 at 6-7 on the year, while the Tigers fall to 6-8.
Kenneth Lee and
Ahaan Malhotra got UR started with its first doubles-match victory, topping RIT's Brian Bork and Verosh Jayanetti, 8-3.
Kai Yuminaga and
Krish Vennam then topped Christian Berko and Grahith Movva at No. 1-doubles, 8-4, before
Rahul Ravi and
Kavin Shukla finished off the doubles sweep, topping Brennan Bull and Joel Pho at No. 2-doubles, 8-6.
The six singles matches would prove to be a bit more competitive, but UR would still take five of six to finish off the victory. Shukla kept things rolling for Rochester with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Bork at the fourth singles spot to put UR up 4-0, before Ravi came through with the clincher, topping Bull, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 3-singles to seal the victory.
Up 5-0, Movva eked out a win for RIT at No. 1-singles, topping Vennam, 1-6, 6-4, 16-14, but with some tiebreaker wins, Rochester would hold off the Tigers the rest of the way.
At No. 5-singles,
Kei Ogawa defeated Pho, 6-4, 6-2, while at No. 2-singles, Yuminaga took the first set via tiebreak 7-6 (7-1), before taking set two, 6-2, to finish off the win and put the 'Jackets up 7-1.
Then at No. 6-singles, Malhotra and Max Chang would need an extra set to decide the match after Chang took the first set, 6-2, and Malhotra bounced back, winning the tiebreak, 7-3, to take set two, 7-6, and even the sixth-singles match. Then Malhotra finished things off, 13-11, to take six singles and finish off the 8-1 victory for the Yellowjackets.
Rochester next hits the road for the final time during the regular season, visiting Hamilton, NY for a matchup against NCAA Division I Colgate on Saturday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m.
