Fredonia, NY - University of Rochester softball extended its win streak to 12 with a doubleheader sweep of the Fredonia State Blue Devils, and
Ally Kim became Rochester's all-time stolen base leader with four stolen bases in game one on Tuesday at the Blue Devil Softball Field. The Yellowjackets took game one, 12-0 in a run-rule-shortened five innings, before downing the Blue Devils again in game two, 10-1, in a run-rule-shorted six innings to finish off the sweep.
With the two wins, Rochester moves to 15-5 on the season, while Fredonia drops to 1-15 on the year. The Yellowjackets next head to Brockport, NY for another non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12 beginning at 3:00 p.m.
GAME ONE: Rochester 12, Fredonia 0 (5 inn.)
After
Ally Kim worked a leadoff walk and stolen second,
Bailey Nicholoff was hit by a pitch and
Hannah Keiper drew another walk to load the bases for
Madi Turner. Turner then gave the 'Jackets an early lead with a one-out RBI single, and while Emily Chelius would work out of the bases-loaded jam without any more damage, Rochester would play from in front, up 1-0.
In the circle for UR,
Emily Sharlach worked around a one-out single by Allie Wandell in the bottom of the first, bringing Rochester back up to the plate in the second, where they added to their 1-0 lead.
Molly Mason led off the frame with a single but was caught trying to steal second.
Alexis Klee then grounded out, but Kim followed with a double to start a two-out rally. Kim stole third, recording her 66th career steal to the program's all-time leader in stolen bases before Nicholoff walked to put runners at the corners.
A passed ball and error brought Kim home and moved Nicholoff up to third before Nicholoff stole home on
Jenna Gorecki's walk to extend the lead to 3-0.
And after Sharlach set the Blue Devils down in order in the bottom of the second, UR added two more in the top of the third. Turner drew a leadoff walk and was pinch-ran for by
Jensen Sminchak, who stole both second and third to put another run 90 feet away.
Gilbreath reached on an error to score Sminchak, before Mason brought Gilbreath all the way home from first with an RBI triple, extending Rochester's lead to 5-0.
After another 1-2-3 frame from Sharlach, UR would add another run in the top of the fourth on Nicholoff's sacrifice fly, before the 'Jackets broke through in a big way, scoring six runs in the top of the fifth.
Rochester would make it 7-0, 8-0 and 9-0 Klee's RBI groundout, Kim's RBI single and Nicholoff and Kim's double steal, before Turner put the exclamation point on the victory with a three-run blast, scoring both Keiper and Nicholoff to extend the lead to 12-0.
Sharlach would then pitch another 1-2-3 frame to finish off the run-rule victory and pick up the seniors' second win of the year.
Sharlach (2-1) allowed just two hits and struck out three over 5.0 innings pitched, while Chelius (0-7) took the loss for Fredonia, allowing eight runs over 4.0 innings pitched.
Kim led UR at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, four runs scored, four stolen bases and an RBI, while Turner went 1-for-1 with a home run, two walks, a run scored and four RBI.
With her second stolen base of the game, Kim became UR's all-time leader in stolen bases, surpassing Jessica Sorrentino `08, who swiped 65 bags from 2005-08.
GAME TWO: Rochester 10, Fredonia 1 (6 inn.)
Just like in game one, Rochester got on the board early against Mack Celauro in the top of the first. With one out, Nicholoff reached on an error and stole second, and Gorecki and Keiper followed with back-to-back singles to bring home Nicholoff and give the 'Jackets a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Devils looked to counter in the bottom of the frame, with another one-out single by Wandell, but
Christin Napierkowski got Chelius and Avery Hill to ground out to end the threat, and then settled down with a 1-2-3 second inning.
The Yellowjackets would add another run in the top of the third on another Keiper RBI single, this time scoring Gorecki from second following a one-out double, before UR put the game out of reach out the final two frames.
Klee got Rochester started in the top of the fifth with a leadoff single, coming around to score on Kim's RBI double to make it a 3-0 lead. A batter later Gorecki brought Kim home with an RBI groundout, before Keiper launched her fifth home run of the season, making it a 5-0 UR lead.
And after Turner singled and advanced to second on a passed ball, Sminchak brought home another run with an RBI triple, the first of her career.
Fredonia would get one back in the bottom of the frame on Lexi Wulf's bases-loaded groundout, but the Yellowjackets put up another four-spot in the top of the sixth to pull away.
Mason got things started this time with a leadoff walk in the top of the sixth. Klee followed with a single before a passed ball moved both 'Jackets up a base for Kim, who made it a 7-1 lead with an RBI single. Then Nicholoff capped off the inning with a three-run blast, giving Rochester a 10-1 lead.
And though Fredonia looked to starve off the run rule with a pair of base runners in the bottom of the sixth, Napierkowski got a groundout to end the threat and finish off the 10-1 victory.
Napierkowski (1-0) earned the win, allowing one run on five hits, walking one and striking out two over 6.0 innings pitched. Celauro (1-3) took the loss for Fredonia, allowing six runs on 11 hits over 4.1 innings pitched.
Five 'Jackets tallied multi-hit days, led by Keiper's 3-for-4 with a run scored and three RBI performance. Nicholoff also added three RBI, going 1-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and three RBI, while Kim, Klee and Turner each added a pair of hits.
Rochester next heads to Brockport, NY for another non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 12 against the SUNY Brockport Golden Eagles. First pitch of game one is slated for 3:00 p.m.
