PRINCE ATHLETIC COMPLEX – The University of Rochester women's tennis team closed out its regular season slate with a 7-2 loss at the hands of 21st-ranked Hamilton College on Sunday afternoon at the Lyman Tennis Center.
Prior to the match, UR (6-10) celebrated senior day for its lone senior,
Rola Abouzeina, as the Cairo, Egypt native played in her final home match of her career.
Abouzeina and
Josephine Libby paired together for a solid win at first doubles, earning one of Rochester's two points on the day. The UR duo earned an 8-6 win over the regionally ranked doubles team of Hannah Apsey and Lauren Holtzman.
Hamilton (8-6) added wins in the other doubles matches though, winning 8-2 at #2 and 8-3 at #3 to hold the 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Rochester's Libby kept her terrific sophomore season going in singles, earning another win on the day, topping regionally-ranked Apsey at the top spot in the order. The Yellowjacket All-American won easily in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Elsewhere in the lineup, Abouzeina at number two and
Sanjana Karnam at number three were locked in tight battles. Hamilton's Holtzman edged Abouzeina in straight sets, but needed a tiebreak in set two for a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win.
At three, Stephanie Pratt opened with a 6-3 set win, but Karnam answered winning 7-5 in the second. During the third set tiebreak, Pratt won 10-5 to earn the point.
Hamilton got wins from Shannon Cicero (6-0, 6-1 over
Jasmin Toor) and Hannah Walpole (6-3, 6-2 over
Neha Dania) at four and five, respectively, before Claire Cutler nipped
Stephanie Kim in two tiebreakers for the final point of the match at number six.
Up next for the Yellowjackets is the annual UAA Tennis Championship being held in Altamonte Springs, Florida this coming Thursday through Saturday.
