Women’s Tennis Falls to No. 1 Chicago in UAA Quarterfinals

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – University of Rochester women's tennis fell to the No. 1-ranked and No. 1-seeded University of Chicago Maroons, 5-0, on Thursday in the quarterfinal round of the 2023 University Athletic Association (UAA) Tennis Championships at Sanlando Park.
 
#1 UChicago got off to a quick start taking all three doubles matches behind a pair of regionally and nationally-ranked doubles pairs. At No. 3-doubles, the Maroons took their first point against No. 8-seeded Rochester, as Lauren Khou and Nicole Geller topped Sanjana Karnam and Jaclyn Dron, 8-0.
 
Then at No. 1-doubles, Sylwia Mikos and Shianna Guo, the No. 2-ranked doubles pairing in DIII, defeated Josephine Libby and Rola Abouzeina, 8-2, before the No. 3-ranked doubles pairing in Div. III, UChicago's Perene Wang and Claudia Ng, wrapped up the doubles sweep with a competitive, 8-5 win over Jasmin Toor and Stephanie Kim.
 
In singles action, Libby led early on in the first set against No. 1-ranked Mikos at No. 1-singles, but the Maroons would clinch the victory, advancing to the semifinals with wins at No. 3 and 4 singles.
 
At No. 3-singles, Geller, nationally ranked No. 21 and No. 7 in the Central Region, defeated Karnam, 6-0, 6-0; before Brooke Pederson, regionally ranked No. 18, picked up the clinching point for the Maroons, 6-0, 6-1, over Toor at No. 4-singles.
 
Elsewhere in the unfinished matches, Abouzeina and No. 33-ranked Guo were in a competitive set two with Abouzeina down 5-3 before UChicago clinched, and Neha Dania took a few points from No. 15 Miranda Yuan at No. 5-singles, dropping set one, 6-4 and taking a 2-1 lead in set two before the match ended.
 
Rochester next advances to the consolation bracket, where they'll face either No. 4-seeded CWRU or No. 5-seeded NYU in the consolation semifinals on Friday, April 21 at 12:30 p.m.
